A customer recently showed up at one of our locations to pick up an item that was purchased with instructions of "local pickup only". This customer did not contact us after purchasing the item and just showed up at one of our locations looking for his item after he had "been told by Ebay that his item was ready for pickup".
When we questioned the customer about how he had been told to come and pickup his item, he showed us a message on his phone from Ebay with a QR code and instructions for him to come to one of our locations to retrieve this item. The customer confirmed that he had not contacted us directly after his purchase to arrange a pickup - because he had already received what he believed to be a notification from Ebay with the address for one of our locations that his item was ready to be picked up.
We were not notified by Ebay that they had sent out a notice to the buyer with information on when and where to pick up the item. From the message that the buyer showed our staff - there did not seem to be any instructions for the buyer to contact the seller before going to the location provided by Ebay to pickup his/her item.
Fortunately the buyer arrived at the correct location and during a time frame when staff were available to assist him in finding his item; but our company does have multiple locations that aren't all open the same hours.
Has anyone else had this experience? Is there a way that buyers can be required to contact the seller before Ebay provides the buyer with information on where to pick an item up that has been purchased?
