Buyer's shipping address...what to do when...

I sold an item and contacted/notified the buyer that I would send it USPS when the Post Office reopened after the closure for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The purchaser responded that if I was sending USPS - which was the only option I had listed in the auction, that I would have to send it to their P.O. Box address as they didn't receive US mail delivery at the physical address provided by eBay label printing or PayPal. I suggested they add the P.O. Box address to their eBay account and to PayPal which would certainly be beneficial when purchasing in the future; but they did not and stated in a reply that it would most likely default to the P.O. Box as the last four digits after the zip code was the same as the box number. I sent the package to the physical address, and on the advice of the postmaster wrote P.O. Box address next to it in Sharpie permanent marker. I also spent an additional, approximately $9.00 in costs for insurance and signature confirmation then uploaded a tracking number to the auction page. According to the tracking information, the package made it to their state, but as you may have already guessed, was turned around to my address and I will receive it today, 1-25-2020. I notified the purchaser when I noticed it was going to be returned and again urged them add their new address to their account - simple effort; but as of this writing they have not responded. What are my options or how should I proceed: Resend it to the P.O. Box; Wait for a response from the purchaser or cancel the sale, issue a refund and ask eBay to refund the fees; relist the item and block the purchaser from further transactions or is there some other appropriate action? I'd like to conclude the transaction in an result that leaves everyone satisfied despite the confusion. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Well I have different address to ship to as some will not ship to a PO.

I use the one needed as per order info on a listing.

 

In your case I think I would cancel the sale due to address, when I got the item back.

Thanks, I maintained a P.O. Box for years and just selected where I wanted the item sent from the list before completing payment on that page. I don't want to cancel the transaction, but if the purchaser is unresponsive I won't have any choice and will have to absorb the additional costs; but nothing is a total loss if something can be learned. I just wanted to accommodate the buyer and it may conclude with only a modest loss for the lesson learned.
