Is Ebay kidding? They want this highly personal info to "verify" my identity before they'll pay me money for the stuff I sell with their new payment system starting March 1st. How about my Driver's License number and mother's maiden name too!!
No way I'm giving that kind of info to them. They don't need it and it puts me at risk for identity theft. All they need is my bank's routing number and my account number.
Been an Ebayer for 21 years but I sure won't be selling on Ebay any more unless they rescind this intrusive, identity theft bait policy.

@Anonymous
There are many people that have sold on EBAY for decades. They are not running a business and may sell less than 6-12 items in a given given year.
That has nothing to do to determine if they have a business or not. Having a business isn't something that necessarily requires the seller to be set up in their state as a registered business. That isn't how to define it. IRS calls them hobby sellers. So don't confuse having to have a business license with being a business. Every single transaction on Ebay is a business transaction. There are NO personal transactions on this site.
EBAY does not need the info for sellers that no longer need an item or want to sell something collecting dust in their garage/closet. They are not going to prison for selling an item at a fraction of it's initial cost.
Not sure where jail time came up in this conversation, but OK. You are correct there are some rules that protects certain sellers that are ONLY selling stuff from around their OWN home. Not someone else's home, not from garage sales, not from purchasing something to resale it whether it is used or new. But if they are ONLY selling stuff from around their own home, IRS has some provisions for them. However that doesn't mean that these sellers don't need to claim their income on their income tax reports. They may end up not paying any additional taxes, but the sales, expenses and income may very well need to be reported. Each seller needs to check the rules to see what their little business fits into.
EBAY can certainly differentiate between those sellers and any seller that meets a higher criteria in terms of sales volume or dollars.
How? Just because a seller only sells a few things a year doesn't mean they are selling used stuff from around their home only. For Ebay to make this determination you want, sellers would have to report to Ebay where they got the item they are selling and likely other information. A blanket statement of if you sell less than XX number of items a year, you don't have to be concerned about reporting income would be an enormous risk to Ebay that is highly likely to backfire on them quickly. It is NOT Ebay's JOB to determine who / what seller is taxable and which are not. That is our own Jobs.
EBAY is asking for something they don't need. That means there is an ulterior motive.
NO, you are making assumptions because you don't like the question. That is really different. MP is requiring the last four digits of seller's SSNs for sellers that their history doesn't show they get even close to the minimum thresholds for 1099Ks
A couple things to remember about that. If things change and the seller starts selling more that looks like they may get close or exceed the IRS limits, then Ebay will require the full number because they need it to file the 1099K.
Or about 8 states so far have passed laws in their states that a 1099K has to be filed for the thresholds they have set for their state. Some are as low as $600. So for those states, MP will require the entire SSN for many casual sellers.
You assume too much.

Exactly, that's the info a hacker would need to fleece you bank account just by making a phone call.
Incredible! This new deal is a security flaw from conception.

Ebay has protected our information for over 25 years. To assume that now that they are collecting more information on sellers entering MP that somehow Ebay will stop protecting us simply isn't even logical.

Went to Mercari instead. Now eBay are asking just for the last 4 and DOB and keeps sending me email to update my info. No thanks.
ive still got $125 with managed payment. I sold an item after switching without realizing I needed to give eBay my info. So for me $125 vs my privacy. Yeah I chalked it up as a loss.

@mam98031 LOL! "Logical" has nothing to do with the effort of Hackers out there in Cyberland!!! What eBay did with Managed Payment is make themselves a bigger target for Hackers then they were before. I'm sure they have spent a great deal of money beefing up their security because they sure haven't spent that money on getting good programmers LOL!

I agree.
And it won't stop there. They'll keep thinking of some info they need.
They'll probably sell this info, too, eventually. They'll send around some agreement you have to sign or get suspended in a year or so.
It's like the old frog in the boiling water situation. They'll just keep raising the bar and sit there and laugh as people comply like lemmings (how's that for a mixed metaphor, hee, hee?)

@dugoldstuff You are truly a literary genius ... your creative writing skills are unsurpassed ... you are probably the life of every part you go to and some of your friends (5 in all) probably throw parties knowing you will show up ...
As to the rest of that post ... you are probably right ...

The chances of being hacked by a multimillion dollar company like Ebay and a reputable payment processor like Adyen who handle billions and billions of dollars in accounts from Etsy and many other corporate enterprises is slim. You are more likely to get hacked using your WiFi , or your credit card at a gas station.
Duh, hackers don't make all that effort to go after single sales at local gas stations. What's the percent return on that for the effort?
I don't see my We-Go local gas station listed below, but enjoy the list below, you might recognize some of the names.
Major companies that have been hacked:
eBay
CVS
Berkshire Hathaway
United Health Group
AT&T
Costco
Apple
Exxon Mobile
Toyota
Amazon
BP
Equifax
Yahoo
Adobe
First American Financial
Marriott
Heartland Payment Systems
Capital One
Quora
Uber
Home Depot
MGM Grand
Zoom
Magellan Health

Thank you!
I don't go to any parties. Being around drunk people is not my idea of a good time.
Also, I only have three people I would call friends, so you overestimate me. 🙂

You go to Mercari because you don't like the MP program. FYI, you had to supply your DOB when you opened your Ebay account as Ebay requires members to be at least 18 years old. So explain, what is it you like better about Mercari's payment process over the MP program. I'm very curious.

Logic does have a lot to do with it as I said before. It simply doesn't make sense to allege that Ebay will somehow lessen security so that hackers can get at our information easier. It is silly and it isn't logical. It is simply an effort to dismiss Ebay and further the bashing of the site with illogical and ridiculous accusations.
Now hacking a site is something we all must stay aware of at all times. That is good business. But if one feels that Ebay has very little security on our info or are so paranoid about the site getting hacked, online selling may not be for them. ALL, without exception, ALL internet sites are at risk to be hacked.

This is very true. The US government DOES NOT request Date of Birth on a W-9.
I am confused why ebay wants this very personal info. Don't tell me "to prove one is over 18." They could ASK and if someone says "yes", they have done their due diligence. Asking for a seller's actual date of birth seems a bit intrusive to me.

Those entering MP must have their identification verified. This is a requirement of the FEDERAL Anti Money Laundering Laws.

I know some are making this seem as if Ebay has no reason for certain information and they are just collecting it to collect it. That is simply silly.
You may not like it that they asked your for your birthdate when you signed up for an account on Ebay, but they did and it was to prove you were at least 18 years old. Don't believe me. It is a simple thing to check. Fine one of your seller friends that is not yet in MP, have them look at their account set up info in the Site Preferences, they will see that their birth date is already there.
Then there is the fact that when you sign up for MP the only ask for 3 things initially. The last 4 digits of your SSN, Bank Routing Number and Checking account number. They don't ask you for your DOB because that info they already have.

Major companies that have been hacked:
eBay -
The only time it happened was in about February / March of 2014 Ebay was hacked. The site was hacked. The hackers were able to get the passwords on quite a few accounts. However that is encrypted information and the hackers were never able to break the coding, so they never got to our more sensitive information. So no one lost any financial info and Ebay did have some as sellers put in auto payment information for the Monthly Seller Invoice and some sellers had credit cards as a back up funding source. But the Ebay security held up to this attack and sellers were no worse for the wear.
Pretty good odds to me - you also left a couple of banks that were hacked off your list
I have been imported from Australia and this is my posting ID

I respect your opinion that you feel Ebay is a bigger target for hackers. The actual reality is that every internet site is always at risk for getting hacked. It is something we all but always be on the lookout for.
