eBay Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number

Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number . I am not a big seller I just sold a few things I never used that I had then eBay locked my account AFTER selling some stuff saying I had to update my account. I refused to give my private information. I called eBay and of course I was tossed around from one person to another. I asked them why PayPal doesn’t ask you that kind of private information they allow you to use your bank card like a credit card and do two small deposits with one withdrawal to verify. If you are a business they only require your EIN number.  Never do they ask you for your private information. Brittany from eBay the last woman I was talking to said well PayPal is a Financial company and a eBay is a market place. Ok so that supposed to make me feel comfortable giving Them my private information? That is supposed to tell me it’s Secure to do so? I had to ship the stuff I sold to the people because I’m not a jerk but eBay won’t give me my money. I told Britney I was deleting my account she sent me the link. Once I know the people received what they purchased ( because I’m honest)  and want to make sure they got it even though it cost me money. I WAS a victim of fraud twice. My SS# was stolen and it ended up freezing my tax returns and the second time I had my bank account drained. I was told by the police to NEVER give your SS # out other than in person and never give your routing # out unless it’s in person or a government site which have very high security and Only if you need to exp: direct deposit tax return. I have never given it out since. There is NO good reason eBay needs that. They have documentation they took the sales tax out. Personally I think anyone that got ripped off by eBay and they will not give them their money back need to get together and sue eBay.

@mam98031

Sorry I did not get back to you earlier - my internet went out.

Thank you so much!!!   I actually did this when I set up for MP since they would not accept my PO Box.  I have it set up as:

Name:   xxx  xxxxxxxx

Address: xxx anyplace st. unit xxxxx

City  State  Zip

It just will not match up EXACTLY with my bank acct address etc. so I am not sure how this will all work out.

The only bright side is that the unit # is the same as my PO # and that the city state & zip are the same.

...IDK...

...Sigh...

Yes I agree, your bank account needs to share the same address.  However at this point I would wait until the payment team responds so you only have to change your address at your bank once to whatever it is that Ebay needs and will accept.

Thank you @mam98031  and @lacemaker3

I am happy to know some very thorough people in this community.  Hopefully the payments team will have an answer for me and others who may be in the same situation.

@hurryagain, have you tried entering the Dual Address format on eBay?

I know it won't match your bank account right now, but I wondered if it might "fool" the program that blocks you from entering a PO Box. It's a long shot, but it's worth a try, because it is a valid USPS address format, and you could use it for your bank account as well if it works.

I thought a bit more about which address a package would be delivered to, because there's conflicting information; the website that @mam98031 linked to says that USPS doesn't do what the USPS link says it does.

However, in your situation, only one of the two addresses has USPS mail delivery to it, so I think no matter which line you put it in, as long as the zip code is correct, USPS would deliver to the address that has mail delivery. Of course that would be the PO Box. And, if you used the dual address for a courier delivery, they are also going to deliver to the address that is within their service area.

@lacemaker3

I do have my PO Box listed in eBay as my ship to address if I purchase anything under that account which i do from time to time.  I am hoping that the payment group will have an answer to this quandary, that way I will only have to change one area one time...whichever that area may be.

It is a bit frustrating because PayPal did not need a physical address...my PO Box was just fine with them and I  made quite a few sales this past year.  (I only joined MP a few days ago).

...I am really not sure if I should continue to sell right now.  I already have 5 sales under MP and I am wondering if I am going to be paid.

I'm not sure, but I think the reason for that is some changes that happened in the Anti Money Laundering laws just last year.

eBay Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number

I checked my Credit Union and it only has my PO Box as my address.

Guess what ... my PO Box is the address the IRS has for me (I got my stimulus check yesterday) and my PO Box is the only address the IRS has when I send in my quarterly estimated taxes. My PO Box is the address Social Security has for me.

The only "fix" I can come up with is for the Registration area of the eBay account has a space for physical address and another space for mailing address. But it still won't match a physical address that would show on any bank statements provided because that would still be PO Box.  I'm not changing my address on bank statements to match what eBay thinks it needs.

This is getting about as stupid as that constant "ding" when you log into your account for your mobile number. What part of I don't have a cellphone does eBay not understand? How many times do you have to click Not Now before it realizes Not Now means Never?

@readabouthorses

I am so happy that there are those here like you and @mam98031  and @lacemaker3 who actually know of these types of rural situations...if I didn't have others here who "get it," I would be going out of my mind with this situation.  I feel a bit grounded because the three of you understand my situation.  I have some hope that this can be resolved.

Thank you to all for your work and insight in my case - I really appreciate it!

Well call me CONFUSED.  This post says this while the one right above it from the same payments_team@ebay  tag says this:

@mam98031 that is a good question. Sellers must provide a physical address for managed payments. A PO Box will not be accepted.

Post #123.

Humm I wonder why some sellers are confused on the details!!!

@mam98031 a physical address is the address of the physical location (street address) of a business/seller. A PO Box will not be accepted for managed payments.

And what if my bank account info is my PO box, like it is, like my driver's license is and everything else is?

Do I need to stop selling?  Should I put a notice to my customers on my listings that I will not be able to sell here for the foreseeable future?  Hopefully I will be able to return?  I have already sold a few things and have others in auction ending very soon.  Do I stop and cancel everything?  What happens if I cannot get paid?  I cannot sell and not get compensated with the proceeds of the sale - I just can't.  I have ALWAYS reported my sales for tax purposes so that is not at issue for me.

Please advise me as to how to proceed in regards to selling (or not selling) here.

Thank you for your time on this matter.

So what does a member do when that physical address can NOT be used for mail delivery.  Some people have to have a PO box in order to receive mail.

A physical address is NOT always the same as a mailing address and they can't always be the same.  So what is the fix for those MP has onboarded and holding money on.  What choice do these sellers have so they can get them money flowing out of MP as it should?

eBay Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number

To summarize the information provided in this thread:
  • A physical address is required when registering for managed payments, a PO Box will not qualify
  • The provided address must match the one on the seller's bank account
  • If there are further concerns about what will or will not qualify, we suggest sellers request a call from customer service
We have addressed this topic to the extent we are able to, and will no longer be engaging on this topic. Thanks!
