eBay Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number

Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number . I am not a big seller I just sold a few things I never used that I had then eBay locked my account AFTER selling some stuff saying I had to update my account. I refused to give my private information. I called eBay and of course I was tossed around from one person to another. I asked them why PayPal doesn’t ask you that kind of private information they allow you to use your bank card like a credit card and do two small deposits with one withdrawal to verify. If you are a business they only require your EIN number.  Never do they ask you for your private information. Brittany from eBay the last woman I was talking to said well PayPal is a Financial company and a eBay is a market place. Ok so that supposed to make me feel comfortable giving Them my private information? That is supposed to tell me it’s Secure to do so? I had to ship the stuff I sold to the people because I’m not a jerk but eBay won’t give me my money. I told Britney I was deleting my account she sent me the link. Once I know the people received what they purchased ( because I’m honest)  and want to make sure they got it even though it cost me money. I WAS a victim of fraud twice. My SS# was stolen and it ended up freezing my tax returns and the second time I had my bank account drained. I was told by the police to NEVER give your SS # out other than in person and never give your routing # out unless it’s in person or a government site which have very high security and Only if you need to exp: direct deposit tax return. I have never given it out since. There is NO good reason eBay needs that. They have documentation they took the sales tax out. Personally I think anyone that got ripped off by eBay and they will not give them their money back need to get together and sue eBay.

Re: eBay Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number

I have been on eBay since 2000 and have seen the migration away from customer service.  Any internet security specialist will tell you 2 things, NEVER give your SSN or bank info to ANY internet sight short of the government.  If the site is hacked your done and so is your identity.   I too am not a big eBay seller and after the new requirement not at all.  I think many of the little sellers like myself who are just trying to get a few bucks off items they have will do the same.  What does that mean for buyers?  Less bargains to be gotten.  Personally, all good things come to an end and so the story for eBay.  I will be looking to the other auction sites and will be using Craig’s list more often.  It’s a shame eBay decided to cut out paypal just so they could keep all the money, again, to so much for protecting the buyers and sellers.   I for one won’t be STUPID enough to give then critical confidential information or direct access to my bank accounts, not happening…

Maybe I'll move them again to Mercari or Etsy, where the listing might sell a little better.

You do know that Etsy uses the very same payment program and have been for a few years now.

Have a great day.

I was here when the site was hacked and they didn't get my bank account or personal information because of the security they have in place.

Can the site be hacked again, sure it could, like any other web site.

Have a great day.

Consider yourself very fortunate that they did not get your info,  consider Equifax, they have some of the best internet security people working for them and we all know what happened there.

Heck, its nearly impossible to get someone on the phone at Ebay from all the cutbacks they have done.  Imagine what's gonna happen when they get hacked, and believe me it will happen.  Ask yourself the question is it worth the risk?  No, not in my book.  I wish you the best and hope I never have to say I told you so.  my best to you Ebay, unfortunate I believe your greed will be your death.

@star-master

@kensgiftshop wasn't the only member of Ebay that didn't have their information breached.  I didn't, you didn't nor did ANYONE else.  That is because the hackers could NOT break Ebay's encryption code.  Not a single member lost ANY financial info to the hackers.

While I understand some seem bent on finding some reason to justify their decision not to move forward with Ebay and enroll in MP.  It simply isn't necessary.  You have every right to decide not to move forward and you don't need any reason beyond the fact that you decided not to.  Continuing to pass around incorrect information in an effort to sling mud at Ebay simply isn't necessary.

And to suggest now that Ebay is collecting more financial information on sellers that they are now going to relax their security on the site is ridiculous.  Borderline Libel.

NO matter what site you go to, they are at just as much risk to be hacked as Ebay is.  The simple fact they are an online site holds that to be true.

Why in the world would Ebay, a for profit company, not have the right to generate a profit and therefore you consider that "greed".  Every single seller comes here to make a profit, that includes YOU.  So my guess is by your definition we are ALL greedy.

Agree. I am not giving them my security number or account number. They never delete it and god knows what they will sell it for. Good luck with closing your account- they will never delete your information. I closed my account years ago to only find it is still there after four years... They proved to me they do not respect my privacy and so won't be getting any more private information from me. Period.

The point is giving the actual check number not the routing number

Re: eBay Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number

Indeed, for the casual seller, it is not something that will be worth the risk or imposition.  No, PayPal has never required bank account information, and I continue to get paid just fine by eBay through PayPal for items that are selling even as recently as June 9, 2021.  Despite being "after the deadline", and despite having my ability to add new listings disabled even before the deadline.

So eBay certainly "wants it to happen", but apparently not so much that they're willing to actually forego the seller fees they'll lose by terminating the listings of those who aren't interested in providing their bank account.  And they have continued paying those sellers through PayPal.  Who knows what else they ultimately won't follow-through on, when it actually comes down to them having to throw money out the window.

Indeed, it's not "the routing number" that is any problem, and that's public information on the bank's web site, usually.  Its giving someone the permission and all the information they would need to remove funds from your bank account anytime they feel like it.  I certainly don't give that permission to anyone else I'm doing business with, and I certainly don't setup new bank accounts for everyone I do business with.  Nor did I ever give that permission to PayPal, and there is no reason I would be giving it to eBay either.

I don't dispute "it's no big deal" for someone making a living or notable side business off eBay, who might have already had separate business financial accounts, and who probably even moved to Managed Payments long ago.  For those of us who have been just infrequent and casual sellers for 10+ years though, the benefit of the low frequency use doesn't justify the ask.

If it was "necessary", then the question would be over.  But they can verify who I am, and they can pay me, without saying "we must have your bank account."  That part is a choice they are making, because of the customer protections it eliminates and suddenly the customer has no recourse other than the one eBay wants to allow.

Obviously still their choice to make.  If they actually follow through without "suddenly realizing there is a different option" once they see the numbers, then we're simply out and eBay will be a bit less suited to "casual selling."

My opinion:  eBay requiring sellers to link there personal bank accounts and to give eBay SS#  information seems very wrong.  Sellers should  boycott and stop using eBay.

When anyone agrees with eBay's new rules. They are allowing eBay to have full access of entering and removing any amount of money from there personnel bank account.

I will No longer be using eBay.

"
The government is the one that requires eBay to collect this info so they can verify your identity and issue 1099 forms as required. You gave the information to PayPal at one point- this is essentially the same thing.
"

This is a falsehood spread by word-of-mouth, and not by those whom have examined the tax revisions of US (and many states) tax laws.

The truth of the matter is. That by providing a bank account, you have satisfied the requirement. UNLESS you are running a business; which then (but not in all circumstances) justifies the need to ask for a SSN/TIN.

Truth be told; by providing a bank account for your proceeds, and costs. You have satisfied the tax codes. As the banks are required by law to report your earnings. So, in the case of the IRS. Mission accomplished.

PayPal; unless for a business account. Does not require your SSN. I know this for a fact. As all my eBay sales/seller activity is non-business. So I was never required to provide them an SSN. Only my chosen bank accounts. The banks accounts I provided them, all report my earnings to the IRS. So all parties are satisfied and happy.

They need your SSN because it is required by law.

"

No. They need a verifiable bank account. So that they

  • can pay you your proceeds
  • ensure that your earnings reported to the IRS

That satisfies US tax laws in nearly every state in the US.

I can not boycott eBay, I make my living here.

I have been on MP a long time and nothing untoward has happened to me, I feel more secure with Adyen/eBay than some banks actually.
