Why does eBay need my social security number when they could easily send me a total amount of sales

I have signed no contract with eBay, only agreements to their terms of operation.  Without a contract, there is no basis for a 1099 to be issued, nor is there any reason to supply eBay with a social security number.  eBay is performing a service for me, and I pay them for that service.  Logically, I should be creating a 1099 for eBay.

When eBay sends me a contract, I will hand it to my lawyer and my tax preparation representative and then, and only then can two parties be distinguished.  One party hires and fires (me), and one performs a service (eBay).

So don't send them your social security number then .  Not going to impact any of us.

For eBay to send you money the law requires that they know who they are sending that money to.

@railroadsonparade

Sounds like another tax dodger.

If you don't plan on getting paid, you might as well remove your other listings.

When you go to get your money from your State, in 6 months to a year or more, you'll have to provide your SSN.

You bring up an excellent point.  What is eBay if they send you money but have no contract with the sale?

Welcome to the 21st century...where everyone needs your social security number to do business with you.

Driver's License, passport, banking and so on.

'Logically, I should be creating a 1099 for eBay'...as just a person wouldn't that be hard to do?

Social Security is an investment portfolio that operates in tandem with the taxation and finance of the Internal Revenue Service.  The basis of the portfolio is on earned income.  This is protected under privacy laws.  It has impact on you and whoever it is you are speaking for when you say "us".

eBay is a selling platform, same as an owner of a parking lot who allows people to buy and sell on their property.  They are paid by the sellers to perform that service.  eBay knows about sales, but like the parking lot owner, they have no contract with the sellers or the buyers, so what are they doing?  They are revealing your financial information to make money.

I'm not a tax dodger, I'm a citizen who knows the law, and the lawmakers are putting one over on you.  They have no right to employ eBay to reveal your personal transactions.  If anything, you should be sending eBay a 1099 for the services they render, but for no logical reason should eBay be making money off of revealing what is private, your finances.  You pay eBay, they are not your employer.

No, they are not your employer.

But, you do make money selling your items here that you're supposed to be reporting and the IRS want's their share.

I'm sure you can contact the IRS and they'll get it all straightened out for you.

Re: Why does eBay need my social security number when they could easily send me a total amount of sa

one very simple basic reason is they are the money handler, electronic monetary transactions are tracked by law, your social security number is your tracker.

you can't "evade" taxes on ebay sorry to inform you.

it's pretty cut and dry

if you want to evade taxes have a yard sale with cash only.
good luck!

Re: Why does eBay need my social security number when they could easily send me a total amount of sa

I suggest that you schedule a meeting with your lawyer to discuss whether by selling on Ebay you have entered into a contract with Ebay, and exactly what privacy rights you have relative to your SSN which is used by the US government as a taxpayer identification number before you make a stand thinking you are righteously protecting your rights from the ever invasive corporate monster known as Ebay.

You might want to print out the Ebay User Agreement and bring it to that meeting

There is nothing about having a contract in the law.  If you commit a taxable act, you have to pay the tax.  It's like retail sales tax. You don't have a contract for the smaller purchases but you still have to pay the tax.
