What does Funds On Hold" Awaiting Authentication mean? How do I get my money from a sale?

I sold an item on eBay. The buyer paid, I shipped the item myself (not through ebay) with UPS and entered the tracking number in eBay tracking. The status for the item shows "Funds on hold: awaiting authentication". What does this mean? How do I get my money released?

Have you completed the transition to Managed Payments?

eBay needs a checking account to deposit your preceeds into. Paypal is no longer an option for funds from selling.....

You should be seeing prompts and/or links to fill out the appropriate forms

I assume that the hold is on until an item is authenticated by eBay.  Some higher priced items are first sent to the eBay Authenticator.  I worry that you didn’t get the right info on your mailing label - eBay needs the right info to know the listing and where it should go after authentication.

Yep this is correct: your sneakers went through eBay's authenticity program...

I didn't use ebay's mailing label to ship. The shipping address was wrong and the buyer decided he wanted UPS instead of USPS, so I went directly to UPS on my own and paid for it there.

Uh oh - I think there is your problem.  Shoes over a certain value are authenticated.  The eBay provided address would be to the Authenticator, not to the buyer.  If I’m right, I don’t know how you will get paid, unless you have the buyer send the shoes back, then you send to the Authenticator.

You just plain got ripped off if you changed the address from what ebay had.....

Depends on how it went down. For all we know, seller checked with buyer on his address because he wanted to double check to make sure everything was in order. Obviously, the address that eBay provided would not be the same as what the buyer would provide. Seller, thinking he is doing the right thing, ships to the buyers actual, legitimate address. Chaos ensues.

first check and see if the buyers user name and the user name that sent you a message to change addy are the same;

Reason usually  no communication can happen between buyer and seller: it is through the authentication service.

Second the authentication are expecting that package and will not receive it: so it wont be long before an item not received will happen...

Third it is way against the rules to by pass such services by changing addy: so you as a seller have no zero protection in this situation....

Good luck with this mess you have allowed to be made.

More likly the purchaser knows exactly what they are doing.

If you didn't ship to the address that Ebay provided and the buyer files an INR, you'll be out the money and shoes.

There should be no problem with the Sauconys (regular 'New' seller hold), but you've got a big problem with the $400 Nikes. Tick this link. >> eBay Authenticity Guarantee | eBay

Every seller has a problem when they ship to an address that is not the address shown on the eBay order... hope you didn't. Good luck and good golly...

The shipping address provided by eBay was not wrong! The address is not the buyer's address it is sent to. It is sent to the Authenticator's address who confirms the shoes are authentic, and then the eBay Authenticator mails the shoes to the buyer. The buyer does not get to specify if they want it shipped by UPS. They cannot dictate shipping terms!

If you were talked into sending it to the buyer instead of to the Authenticator then you just lost your money! The tracking needs to show delivered to the address that came with the payment notice.

Do you understand that now?

You goofed on this one and may be out the money and the sneakers. 

As a seller, you MUST familiarize yourself with the rules, both regarding the items you sell as well as the requirements for seller protection. 

1. When you sell an item that is part of an "authenticity guaranteed" program, you can't circumvent it. 

2. When the order tells you the shipping address (once you're paid), you must ship to and have tracking for that address.
