The real fallout of MP

Now that the majority of the medium to large sellers (read- people who have full time businesses and cant just quit ebay right away) have been forced into managed payments, eBay announced that it is blasting in everyone else- the occasional sellers........ These are the people who casually sell here and use to use the proceeds to buy on ebay.( and largely drive the commerce here). They are mostly unwilling to give SS#, driver licenses, and open new checking account to use ebay...... so they will just leave.

I imagine that in the coming months ebay will lose millions of accounts because of this. In fact 3 of my neighbors just dropped off extra shipping supplies and told me that they want no part of Managed Payments.  The real problem is that these are people that will no longer shop on ebay now as well.......

My mother came by after getting the notice and said she was done too.  Its a shame because she said that she bought 12 blouses just the other week on ebay but if she cant have her money in paypal from the stuff she sells- she is just not interested. She was a typical average person that listed and sold just so they could buy again but she was disappointed now.    My wife showed her how to get a Mercari account and showed her how simple it was to list and how your proceeds can be saved and used onsite (like ebay used to be) or can be transferred to paypal.  She was thrilled- she is a typical online shopaholic!  Ebay lost another seller/buyer.......

I truly think this summer  is going to be an eye-opener for ebay- and unfortunately us

@siamjane8

I opted in during August, 2019. I've been amazed that my mother hasn't been called up. I suppose we have arrived...

Looks like class is soon to be in session. Argh!

I don't think that eBay will lose millions of sellers, I think they expect to lose a couple hundred thousand or so. There will never be an end to the number of people wanting to sell on eBay. The River pays most of their sellers twice a month and the line of people wanting to sell is out the door and around the block.

People are also forgetting how many people DIDN'T want to sell on eBay before because they didn't want to be forced to get a PayPal account. I have a lot of friends who opted to sell on places like Mercari instead because it has no such requirement.

i posted something similar to what you posted about sellers  ive talked too  on another forum about how they where going to leave  ebay because of mps and i got talked down too  on these forums on here. there no winning with them on here its like the same 10 posters that keep posting about how they love  manage payments . i do think its going to hurt ebay too in the coming months with less small time sellers

It's not really MP itself, it's more hassles. It took me hours one day over the summer to manually de-select every country on the planet on every listing because I only want to do U.S. sales. This was after I had to figure out how to get out of the global shipping program that I only learned I was in because I got a buyer from Canada who bought something from me. It's ALWAYS something with eBay. I had to pay extra fees last month because due to a "mistake" or a "glitch," my item was a sponsored item when I never selected it to be.

I'm in the second category, someone who sells on a low scale to get extra money. This is becoming more of a real job, and work is always something I've resisted like the plague. I often ask myself why I do this since I don't have to. I'm not even in MP yet. Though, I'm a suburban housewife. If I don't have something to complain about, I'm not going to be happy, either.

What is The River? There's all these new sites and apps popping up. I'm 39 years old. Hello, I don't even know what an app is.

There's no way I would sell on mercari. Their customer support is nil. With so many scammers out there, esp now with the economy in the tank, it sounds like the very worst time to get into selling on a site like that. It's like getting started on eBay. I got scammed on my very first sale because I didn't know the ropes. I did my homework on mercari. It doesn't sound good. For buyers, yes!

Rainbow.dolls,   We have started a Mercari account about 8 months ago in response to the way ebay has chosen to managed payments.   It has been selling great with absolutely no problems- in fact my wife mostly lists there now instead of ebay. Sometimes she will cross list to see what platform will bring in the sale and so far Mercari is far outperforming ebay in bringing in sales ( with vintage toys and fisher price people etc). No problems and great buyers- After the item is received and you get rated- you get your money instantly. If buyer does not rate the item, you get your money on day 3- instantly , no waiting for processing or ebay to collect interest.  And then there are NO returns- that is the best part- no hassles.  There listing tool is simple clear and easy to list in half the time of ebays- which is only getting worse if you have not noticed the announcement of the new unified listing experience that is rolling out- I tried it and they added 3 clicks of a mouse to every field that you type in to do the same thing that we have now!!!!!!!! takes twice as long to list!!!!

I agree with whoever else mentioned that MP is not the problem- it is how ebay uses managed payment system to manipulate our money from sales into profit for ebay by slowing down the process and holding funds for returns and cancelations.  None of the other selling platforms choose to hurt our expected cashflow to advantage themselves- its just crookery.

Anyway- this summer will tell a tale I believe because a company can only ignore its customers for so long before everyone moves on.  Competition is growng 10 fold and ebay stock is falling again even after the free covid bump- that proves the problem is ebay not the economy or the seller or any other excuse ebay uses.

To be sure- I would prefer to sell on ebay- over the years its been a good place to sell for us but this year they are really pushy us away- kinda sad.

Oh and the river you were asking about is code for Amazon- ebay gets touchy if you mention another site that outperforms them....... they dont take criticism well- remember top 10 officials were indicted by FBI for cyber crimes and bullying critics of ebay less than a year ago- sending pigs heads and threatening to kill their husband... Shameful!   But at least the old CEO got a 56 million dollar golden parachute to leave this company in the shambles.

We have about 10 or more posters who constantly bash managed payments, most of whom aren't even in the MP program. At least the 10 who say they love MP are selling in it.

MP is the best...........but I am unsure if its working right.......the problem is they wont stop sending me money.

that takes a lot of getting used to...........especially now that the monthly bill is so small now.

I wanted to try it, but was reluctant with having to put my bank info on there. I didn't do etsy for this reason. Etsy has been hacked - don't know about mercari. It's a risk with me because I don't have credit cards. I only have a debit card account. My husband said fees are worse with mercari (don't know if that's true - it's not what I've heard). I don't do a lot of selling, anyway. I'd probably quit entirely if I left eBay.

Unlike you, one of the 10 bashers, I'm in managed payments.
