Seller marked an item as 'paid' and I haven't authorised. It now says posted. I have read seller's reviews and there are loads of negative reviews in the last month. No payment has been taken from my PayPal account. is this some sort of scam? Can a seller obtain money without authorisation?

I have no idea how this works in the UK:
What does your purchase history show??

Sorry, can't think of a mechanism by which that could happen EXCEPT if the seller somehow has you mixed up with another buyer who DID pay.
When you contacted the seller and asked about this, what did he say?
Also, you are registered in the UK. Answers would probably be the same there, but you could ask on that site just in case someone else has had that experience.

A seller can mark any item as 'paid' doesn't matter if they've been paid or not; since you didn't pay, you didn't pay.

This is the seller you just left negative feedback for? Since you were able to leave feedback, you paid.

A seller marked your unpaid item as paid and shipped it to you? And you are upset about it?
Wait for delivery. When your item arrives leave positive feedback and a thank you. If your item does not arrive within 30 days, file an item not received case and collect your bonus refund.

Although I have no idea why a seller would mark an unpaid item as paid and ship it, something certainly is sketchy about the seller. Yikes! The feedback!
I'm guessing the item was paid for if the seller was able to ship because sellers don't receive the shipping address of the buyer until after payment is made.
