Decide ahead of time the most you are willing to pay, and place that bid ONE time as late in the auction as you are comfortable with, instead of making multiple bids.  If you win, great.  If you lose, someone else was willing to pay more.  Pay immediately for your purchases.

Did you open a Paypal account and register your credit/debit card with them as well as providing a checking account?

Did you link the Paypal account to your ebay account?
