I recently updated bank info on ebays new MP , in that update form they asked for bank acct. info as well as ss#, i was reluctant so i talked to them via phone and they assured me info is safe and secure, dont believe it , a few days after giving ebay my ss# {required to continue selling} my ss# was stolen and used in another state, i cant prove it but be aware your ss# is not safe w/ ebay, they somehow put it out there!

eBay has probably collected millions of SSNs by now, but this problem is unique to you, as far as we know. No one, not one single person, has posted anything here about their SSN being stolen. So what's more believable: someone broke into eBay and ONLY took your SSN, or you unwittingly gave it away, probably to the people you called, thinking they were eBay support, because you found the number on the Internet?

Just curious, how was it used and how did you find out about it?

Never sell anything on eBay that you can't afford to lose.

Had ebay call back service , ebay has always been a secure site, never told them my ss# only entered it on the update form page in ebay, so it is also possible my computer is compromised, still if you must update make sure you have a watchdog on duty Lifelock or something

Only being a King could be better than being a sociopathic tech company manager - we take the risk, they take the profit.

There are a few situations in which you must provide your Social Security (SSN) number to a business, including

  • becoming an employee or independent contractor for a business
  • engaging in a banking, financial or real estate transaction
  • applying for group health insurance through your employer
  • applying for credit

Even when there is no law requiring it, a business might request your SSN and deny you service if you refuse to provide it.
