Ebay says - by 2021 eBay will manage payments for a majority of its marketplace sellers.
Does this mean it is an option and not a requirement to switch by January 1, 2021? This date is a mere 3 weeks away and I have yet to be personally notified - I hope this means I can continue to use Paypal as my payment method.
I do have a question for those who have switched to Managed Payments - do you still use Paypal to pay for your shipping labels? And Paypal doesn't charge for this service? If the answers are yes then no, not sure what their motivation is to do so if they no longer get their 3% from the buyer payment that they will no longer manage.

At some point you will be "encouraged" to register. A few weeks or so later you will be notified of impending activation and then you will be in.
You can't get in early and you can't avoid once called.
As far as shipping labels, most people use eBay instead of PayPal, you can pay for USPS labels from your MP account.

Yes, I still use Paypal to pay for shipping labels.

They had originally hoped to have most eBay sellers switched to MP by the end of 2020. Covid-19 seems to have delayed this a bit. The process has been going on for nearly two years, and now they’ve been saying they hope to have everyone moved over by late 2021.
The contract with PayPal is expiring, and PAYPAL - not eBay but PAYPAL - declined to sign a new contract. So, eBay contracted with Adyen, the payment processor for Etsy and many other sites, to process payments.

I have been looking at the calendar and wondering myself as 2020 ticks to a close. Neither of my accounts have got notice/order to change, and I don't know where you guys get inside info from eBay but I have not seen a thing, not that I have time to look in every nook and cranny of the site. I would expect that they would say something if they're not going to carry out their stated plan to move us all to MP by 2020.
Myself, I could give a rats ass one way or the other about "Managed Payments". But due to their threat, I began preparation a while back by getting another bank account etc. for the day that I have to give up PayPal and my current method of taking care of finance, re: eBay accounts. All that is sitting in the wings now, but here we are less that 3 weeks away and not a peep from eBay.

When you are notified to join Managed Payments, you don't really have a choice, you have to join it or you can't sell on eBay. So, whether it's good or bad isn't really a consideration.

I switched in August. I do not use PayPal for my labels anymore as the funding to that account has dried up. I no longer moniter that balance. I use the pending payment for the label. At the bottom of each label page you get to choose, Paypal is the default but once you select pending payments it becomes the default.

Whether one views it as good or bad isn't as important as the fact it is mandatory. I just wish they would switch my second selling ID, since one is already in, to ease my record keeping.

eBay didn’t refuse to sign a contract - they refused to accept a contract that PayPal wanted, and PayPal refused to accept a contract that eBay wanted. That is how it works.

MP, has been fine. My biggest issue is data/paperwork issues.
Yes and No to your question, I use PP to pay for labels, no money in there they take from my bank. So, not my favorite but is what it is.
Their motivation is if they do not facilitate, I will close my account with them and they will not get any business from me.
There are other ways I can pay for labels.

i've been on MP for almost and month and have had no problems with payouts so far (they come within 2 days of purchases and get processed by my bank quickly)--other than the system wide glitch last week. And I started purchasing shipping via eBay--love that i get to use pending funds for it (though I think PayPal's system for buying/printing labels is better). overall, my concerns about switching to MP haven't been an issue (and I think my fees are a bit lower now).

Switching over is not an option, has to be done 12/31. Paypal account is closed. Ebay takes over for shipping labels, takes it out automatically. In my case I asked to be paid once a week so less confusing in my checking acct. Just found out it was a mistake because the disbursement was waiting, then I sold something and they took it. Calling was no help, was told it was complicated and he would call back. Of course, never did.

I just got the email that I needed to switch over today, but only on this account. I don't know whether that will take care of all my accounts or not. I am inactive with no listings for the next two weeks so this was a good time for the switch.

Is this a way for eBay to record and report all transactions? I'm just a small hobby seller not a business. I don't keep track of my costs and if that is what this is for, it won't be worth it to me to sell anymore on eBay.

No it is about money - transaction processing fees to be exact.
