Is it really necessary to register with eBay Managed Payments?

Hello Everyone!

I got several messages recently asking me to register with eBay Managed Payments. I read about it and I have a few questions. I was thinking that maybe someone can help me out. A little summary about me first: I have a regular account on eBay and no business account. I just enjoy doing some business on eBay as a pastime, and not for a living.  Below are my questions:

1) Am I protected as a seller when I use this system? Is the protection to the same level as with PayPal?

2) How will I transfer the money from a Payoneer account directly to my bank account if I cannot connect my bank account directly to Payoneer? I actually live outside North America, Europe, Australia. I am thinking that I will have to transfer my money from a Payoneer account to my current PayPal first, then finally transfer the money to my Bank account. This means that I will pay more transfer fees!! Can't eBay give people in my category exemption from registration in this case, since not being able to connect my Bank Account directly to a Payoneer account, automatically means that I will end up losing money due to unnecessary transfer fees!!

3) I do not own a business account. I only have a personal account to do some business as a pastime and not for a living. Should I still register with eBay Managed Payments? Can I just carry on with my current system of operation, i.e using PayPal to receive funds etc. This current system works extremely well for me. Based on what I read, I have the impression that this is only for people with eBay business accounts.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards

All eBay sellers are being moved to Managed Payments, there are no other options. We don't use Payoneer on eBay.com, try searching for the Payoneer forum or an eBay forum in a country that uses Payoneer.

the last question is that it doesn't matter if you have a personal or business account.  i just sell occasionally and have a personal account and i had to sign up for managed payments.

Hi guys!

Thanks for your replies!!

OK, so it seems that even though I have a regular account and not a business one, I will need to register for eBay Managed Payments. Fair enough. I have to accept it and I have no choice.

But regarding the Payoneer account, in the messages eBay sent me, it clearly started that I needed to register with Payoneer, if I am not yet registered. I never read that it is not used on eBay.com.

It's not an acceptable payment method on ebay.com, it was a popular payment method on ebay.in. Not sure if it will just be used to process payments for sellers outside of Ayden's purview,  or if it will become a payment option as well.

You need to register with eBay not Payoneer

From eBay: 16/05/2021 Brian

Hi just to clarify - Payoneer is not a payment option, but it is the payout option for sellers in areas not serviced by Adyen.

Sellers do NOT need a Payoneer account any more than they need to have an Adyen account.

Members will not need to change site registration in order to register to have their payments managed by eBay, they just need to make sure that their registration information matches their verification information (name and address on bank account, etc). As long as that is correct they should use the links within the email notification to register and our system will take care of the rest.

the best advice I can give you as a long time seller is to go to your seller hub and click on the payments tab

if you need to do somethg that tab will let you know.

just to reiterate..........you need to do what the payment tab advises you

do not look for links on google.use the links inside seller hub

you can do it

Is it really necessary to register with eBay Managed Payments?

@mau-collectibles-8, I will explain this as well as I can, but there are a lot of misunderstandings about how managed payments works when it is implemented with Payoneer.

eBay.com is based in the USA, but there are sellers on eBay.com from many other countries. Sellers who are based in the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, and many other countries have to provide a bank account to receive payments from Managed Payments.

However, there are other countries where that won't work, and eBay is working with Payoneer to implement Managed Payments in some countries. The process works a bit differently in the countries where Payoneer is being used. According to eBay, in those countries, sellers need to register or create a Payoneer account, and managed payments will deposit their payments into the seller's Payoneer account. Here is what eBay has shown to those sellers:

image.png

eBay has not provided very much information about this. They are making the information available to the sellers who need to use Payoneer, but for most of us who are located in a country that doesn't use Payoneer, we can't see that information.

I found this FAQ about using Payoneer with eBay, on the Payoneer website. I think this is your best source of information about how this works:

https://payoneer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/36112/~/ebay---faq

I will answer your questions as well as I can, but I don't know all the answers because eBay hasn't shared them with us.

  1. Am I protected as a seller when I use this system? Is the protection to the same level as with PayPal
    • You have the same eBay seller protection as you did before.
    • I don't know if Payoneer offers seller protection or if they do, how it compares with PayPal
  2. How will I transfer the money from a Payoneer account directly to my bank account if I cannot connect my bank account directly to Payoneer? ...
  3. I do not own a business account. I only have a personal account to do some business as a pastime and not for a living. Should I still register with eBay Managed Payments? ...
    • Payoneer is not just for businesses. It is also for contractors and freelancers, so it is intended for business payments (like receiving money for sales) but you don't have to be a business to use it.
    • Payoneers offers Individual accounts as well as Business accounts.
    • There may be restrictions with Payoneer, which may require you to register as a business. (Some other sellers are saying that they are required to do so.) If that is the case it is probably because of local requirements and laws in your country. This may be different depending on what country you are in. I don't understand this very well yet, because the information I have read is not very clear or conclusive.
    • You will have to register with Managed Payments in order to continue selling on eBay. It won't be possible to continue using PayPal as your payment processor.

brian@ebay, would you please address this topic again, and confirm or clarify this information below, which I believe is a quote from you? (I can't find an original post from you with this information.)

This is contradictory to the information that eBay has published, which says that sellers in countries where Payoneer will be used, do need to register a Payoneer account to use with Managed Payments.

https://export.ebay.com/en/fees-and-payments/payments/managed-payments/

"... If you have an existing Payoneer account you will be able to link it to your eBay account during registration for eBay to manage payments . If you don’t have a Payoneer account, you will be asked to create one during registration. Proceeds from eBay sales, regardless of the payment option used by the buyer, will be deposited directly to your Payoneer account in US dollars."

@lacemaker3 it's a quote from tyler@ebay. His quote appears to match the information on the help page.

What you've quoted has this line, "Sellers do NOT need a Payoneer account any more than they need to have an Adyen account", but that isn't in Tyler's original quote. It looks like the quote you provided was possibly altered by another member to add that line.

Thanks brian@ebay (and my apologies to tyler@ebay ). No wonder I couldn't find it!

The quote was provided by @downunder-61, in a reply earlier in this thread (Message 6). I guess they must have added the line in the middle, between the two parts of Tyler's original post.

I guess that must have been a misunderstanding. I agree, without that, Tyler's information does match the published information. Sellers using Payoneer do need to have a Payoneer account.

There's a lot of confusion at the moment over whether the Payoneer account has to be a business account, or if an Individual account will do. Can you get clarification on that for us please:

  • Some sellers are reporting that they are being required to provide a Business Payoneer account. I understand that the Payoneer and eBay account types have to match, but some sellers are reporting that they changed their eBay account from Business to Individual, but when they register for Payoneer, they are being told that they still have to provide a Business Payoneer account, even though their eBay account was changed to an Individual account.

Is it really necessary to register with eBay Managed Payments?

Hi guys,

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate it. Things have become clearer now thanks to you!

So I have tried registering to EMP but I could not! I am actually very disappointed. In the third stage of registration, eBay tells me that my debit card details are not recognized!! But my debit card is actually up to date and I use it everyday.

Is eBay rejecting my card details because my debit card is not in USD? If this is the case, can I get a debit card in USD? Does this even exist??

What do you guys think?

Regards

I'm sorry, I have no idea what you are talking about.

What does the debit card have to do with this? You need to register for Managed Payments and provide a Payoneer account where eBay can deposit your payments to when buyers pay you. I don't know what your debit card has to do with this process.
