23 Years ago, a friend showed me this new website called Ebay. I was immediately hooked. I began buying and selling within weeks.
Back then, selling was a hassle because getting paid was a hassle. Then came Paypal.
In my opinion, Paypal was the magic sauce that made Ebay work.
I sold on and off for the last 23 years. I retired, and planned on using Ebay as a source of income in my retirement.
Over the recent years, my opinion of Ebay began to decline big time.
A couple of years ago, they instituted their GOOD TILL CANCELLED for Buy It Now listings. I sold collectables and that policy KILLED my sales. I tried to get the policy changed, but Ebay didn't care. They were MANAGING my sales, and it killed me.
A couple of months ago, I was notified I was being forced into Managed Payments. I read about the program, and didn't see any benefit for ME.
I spoke with several dedicated Managed Payments reps, and again, there was no benefit for me as a seller. I clearly told every rep that the day Ebay forced MP on me was the day I would leave Ebay.
I begged to postpone to a later time. Covid19 is rampant, and now isn't the time to add insult to injury. They didn't care.
That day was Sept. 1.
So, as I sit here, a trusted friend I've had for 23 years is gone. I removed all my listings, I'm no longer selling on Ebay.
Now, I understand Ebay could care less about me. That's become obvious over the last several years.
If 10, or 100, or 1000 sellers leave, Ebay won't care. BUT, if 10,000 or 100,000 leave, at some point, Ebay HAS to care.
I made my statement by leaving, and telling Ebay why I left. If you feel as I do, make your own statement. If Ebay is going to force sellers to choose MP, it should be better then Paypal.

I just gotta say I am impressed you followed through with this. I agree with your sentiment that eBay could care less about its sellers. I still wish I was able to quit selling cold turkey, but I too look forward to the day I am no longer selling on this site. MP is ok, but is clearly nothing more than an unfinished experiment even now. It is a shame eBay has become the garbage company it is today.

Raising fees, slowing payments, and requiring personal information plus full access to my bank account is way too much. And on top of that, the last time I called ebay I had 3 cust serv agents lie to me. Not give wrong info, they purposefully lied.
Over the last few years my accounts have paid ebay 30k+ a year in fees. Yeah, I am a small fish. But enough people like me leaving will kill ebay. Which they deserve, and seemingly want.
If MP isn't right for you, that may be the best decision for you, but make sure you actually understand how MP works so that you are making an informed decision on what is best for you.
MP is not raising fees for a seller in the categories you sell in.
The info they require is required by law, they aren't collecting it just to annoy sellers. It is posters that are saying Ebay will have "full access" to our bank accounts, not Ebay. Because that is really misleading and inaccurate. They can pull money from the attached checking account but that isn't "full access" by any stretch of the imagination. They would ONLY do that to cover a negative balance in your MP account due to your need to refund a buyer.
But as far as your checking account goes, this is such an easy concern to resolve. Just open a separate checking account for your Ebay funds to feed into. Keep it away from your main checking account. It makes bookkeeping easier and it makes your ability to control things easier.
It is likely that most sellers in your bracket that actually learn what the rules of MP are and how it actually functions won't be leaving because they are making enough money on Ebay to stay. MP is far from perfect but it also may not be as bad as you think. But it is a decision for you to make for yourself.
I've never had a job that I like every aspect of it, being an Ebay seller is no exception. MP has lots and lots of room for growth and improvement, there is no doubt of that. And it will continue to change and grow as it has done in the last 3 years.
Speaking for myself only, I do Weekly Deposits. They are released by MP every Tuesday morning and I have it in my bank account before noon on Wednesday. I do however bank with a major bank, so for those using smaller more local banks it could take longer.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Sir,
You are 100% Correct. Ebay can't even keep our accounts from getting hacked, fake buyers, etc BUT NOW WANT US TO TRUST THEM WITH OUR #SS AND BANK ACCOUNTS?!!?! Cmon! I have also been on ebay for over 20 years and the service gets worse and worse. Cant ever get a real person to talk to, nothing but bot emails.
The entire Pay Pal concept was invented to keep banking information separate, that IS why ebay worked. They are not set up for this kind of security at all and it is inappropriate to even ask for it. I get they want to cut Pay Pal out and keep the money, but they are already the most expensive platform to sell on! Now they want to hold funds for three days before paying?
Ebay it has been a great 20 years but it is time to move on. Bonanza, Etsy, whoever, here I come.
Remember when businesses were about service? No me neither.

So do you realize that Ebay and PP's security is quite similar. Especially since Ebay owned PP from 2002 to 2015.
FYI, Ebay has kept our information safe for over 25 years.
Etsy has the SAME money processing system.

I agree. Powerseller here. perfect record in all 4 ratings areas. 24 years selling. But this is not acceptable. Not good for anyone but eBay. My buyers have the products. The USPS has the shipping fees. eBay has the money. I have nothing. I will now sell only Local Pick up. And sell everything else on etsy.

I have been a powerseller on eBay with a perfect record for over 24 years. Now I will only sell local pick up ONLY. I will not allow eBay to collect and hold my money for days while I pay for shipping out of my picket and wait for them to get around to depositing my money days or weeks later.

Yep 15 years on ebay, it now takes more than 14 days to get paid, 2 shipping charges that eBay themselves can't identify as legit. Pulled all my listing. 30 days to go, I'm out of here. I'm an on again off again seller with about $125k in gross sales. I'm now leaving your platform. 100% feedback. Goodbye

Why is it going to take you 14 days to get paid? What makes your account different that others in MP?

I told ebay I refuse to join MP, even after they offered a $200 credit. They have locked my account. After my listing end or sell I will no longer be selling on this account. 17 years, that's how you treat your customers pptth.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with PayPal, they accept all major credit and debit cards, even checks. Ebay just wants their hands in the processing fees & collect interest on funds they hold. Really have no clue why they spun off PayPal, makes no sense.
I can't imagine a new seller being told about managed payments. "You want my checking account so I can sell a pair of used shoes?" There are tons of other places to sell, even for free. I already notice a lot of item can not be found on ebay any more. But what do you expect from a 42 billion dollar company, more greed.

You are right. Ebay has never said there is anything wrong with PP. Ebay has just decided to do their own Money Processing like every other similar site has been doing for years.
New sellers aren't likely to see a lot wrong with it as it is pretty standard for the larger sites out there. It is only the smaller sites that still offer options. Or sites more suitable to occasional sellers.
Yes, Ebay is a for profit company. So you are correct, this is about profits. It is why we are ALL here. You and me and Ebay! So if Ebay is greedy for wanting to make a profit, so are all the sellers.
Some seem to think that bank information is a secret or closely held information. Routing numbers are public information. Anyone can get a routing number for any bank whenever they want. And they don't have to be a member of that bank to get it. In fact many banks have their routing numbers stated on their website.
If anyone ever gives anyone or any company a physical check, they are handing over their routing number and their account number to whomever it is you gave that check to.
But I still understand why some might be reluctant to do this. I suggest doing as I did and lots of other sellers too. I have a separate checking account that I use for all my online selling [I sell on more than just Ebay]. It is separate from my personal account which makes accounting so much easier. I feed all my money from online sales into that account. Works great for me.
I do wish you nothing but the best in whatever you decide to do.

Update 02-18-21 - I too refuse managed payments. After 20 years and getting my sales up to thousands of dollars a year (I know small potatoes compared to most on ebay, part time hobby ) on 3 different accounts I finally today totally faded away. I ended all my listings and have finally given up. Paypal made it so easy come tax time and I don't need to attach my bank account if I don't want. I refuse to give Ebay access to my bank account. Ebay has also been sabotaging the info they send to Paypal this year as far as item descriptions ( ie " Purchase" instead of the actual item description). This causes issues with reconciliation at tax time. I would bet this is to force some to managed payments sooner. I really enjoyed ebay but the love is finally gone. 😞

They spun off PayPal because investors forced them to, due to the growth potential of PayPal's business being much larger than eBay's. PayPal is now worth about 8 times as much as eBay is.

It's now February 2021 and I took all my listings down and want to close my account but eBay owes me one cent (yes one penny) and won't pay it, so I can't close my account.
If you think you still run your small business on eBay you're crazy. They run everything for you, make all the decisions for you and eBay is now tied to the Government and IRS.
No seller on here has an control left.

Like you I sold very unique and often one of kind items and a lot of vintage items. Trying to meet all of eBays selling requirements was impossible because I couldn't get the specs on them eBay kept hounding me to add to my listing.
The final straw for me was when a buyer told me he say the item had shipped and wanted the tracking number. I hadn't shipped it yet, so why did eBay tell him I did? I cancelled the order, gave the buyer his money back and am trying to close my account. It's 2/21/2021. eBay has owed me one cent, a penny for two months and won't pay me so I can close my account.
That's the new eBay. If you sell and think you have control of your business, you're crazy. You don't!

Why are you concerned about what IRS knows about your sales here? If you had been reporting your income for online sales to IRS as you likely should have been in previous years, there is likely no issue now. But I can see your concern if you weren't claiming your online sale income in previous years. That may become a problem if you start to qualify for 1099Ks.
I wish you well in whatever you decide to do.
