I refused to accept Managed Payments and left Ebay.

23 Years ago, a friend showed me this new website called Ebay.  I was immediately hooked.  I began buying and selling within weeks.

Back then, selling was a hassle because getting paid was a hassle.  Then came Paypal.

In my opinion, Paypal was the magic sauce that made Ebay work.

I sold on and off for the last 23 years.  I retired, and planned on using Ebay as a source of income in my retirement.

Over the recent years, my opinion of Ebay began to decline big time.

A couple of years ago, they instituted their GOOD TILL CANCELLED for Buy It Now listings.  I sold collectables and that policy KILLED my sales.  I tried to get the policy changed, but Ebay didn't care.  They were MANAGING my sales, and it killed me.

A couple of months ago, I was notified I was being forced into Managed Payments.  I read about the program, and didn't see any benefit for ME.

I spoke with several dedicated Managed Payments reps, and again, there was no benefit for me as a seller.  I clearly told every rep that the day Ebay forced MP on me was the day I would leave Ebay.

I begged to postpone to a later time.  Covid19 is rampant, and now isn't the time to add insult to injury.  They didn't care.

That day was Sept. 1.

So, as I sit here, a trusted friend I've had for 23 years is gone.  I removed all my listings, I'm no longer selling on Ebay.

Now, I understand Ebay could care less about me.  That's become obvious over the last several years.

If 10, or 100, or 1000 sellers leave, Ebay won't care.  BUT, if 10,000 or 100,000 leave, at some point, Ebay HAS to care.

I made my statement by leaving, and telling Ebay why I left.  If you feel as I do, make your own statement.  If Ebay is going to force sellers to choose MP, it should be better then Paypal.

Just like moving from money order to PayPal, auctions to fixed price listings, offers, etc., eBay can and will change.  Do nothing, and eBay will fade away.  They have to change.  They'll make some mistakes along the way, but that is to be expected.  If they don't try anything, there will be A LOT of us that will be wondering why eBay is so stuck in the past.

Some of us have already been wondering that for years. Forcing sellers to have a PayPal account to be able to sell is ridiculously antiquated in this day and age when most people neither have nor want PayPal.

The argument that we shouldn't take new forms of payment reminds me of the dinosaurs that would only accept cash.  They didn't trust CC companies, and couldn't be bothered to change.  Those dinosaurs lost out on so many sales, all in the attempt to keep their lives as simple as possible.

My B&M job started accepting Apple/Google/Samsung Pay last year after we kept getting more and more potential customers asking if they could use those methods to pay. When we said no, they would leave, and we would lose a sale. Now we accept them, and we get all of those sales we would otherwise have lost. (And often, when we tell someone we do take those payment methods, they end up staying and browsing around and buying MORE than they'd originally came for.)

Re: I refused to accept Managed Payments and left Ebay.

I would already classify you as an "eBay robot". You seem to be consumed by them, with every waking moment on these boards, spouting the same things over and over and over. You rage that you'll never be "controlled" by eBay, yet that is exactly what I see happening. They have you on a string and you just won't let go. You let them consume your life and turn you into a "robot". Sad, indeed.

Re: I refused to accept Managed Payments and left Ebay.

@conveyorbelts05 sure, but ebay has almost no benefits

Paypal required SS# and Bank info if you plan on having your $ transferred to your bank account (vs ATM Cards, which they did NOT have years ago, so banking info WAS required)

Regarding 'ebay has no benefits':

Except 180,000,000 possible eyes on your items for sale

Except they allow auctions

Except they allow used items

Except they are 45% cheaper in fees for sellers that Az

Ayden is their processor and without you giving SS# for 1099 purposes, you cannot sell here. Does the local garage sale ask for that? Of course not, but you're not setting up a shop in the neighbors garage and selling 24/7 like you are here.

Mercari is getting very large too.  But you don't get paid there until after the buyer receives the item.  Mercari basically holds the funds in escrow.

Re: I refused to accept Managed Payments and left Ebay.

If Ayden is the payment processor, then shouldn't you SSN number be going to Ayden and Ayden should be processing the 1099 forms on the number and amount of transactions they have processed for you?  Why would E-Bay need this information at all... unless they have another purpose in mind!

So, what are you going to do?  I'm assuming you have a future path that's far better.  What is it?

Re: I refused to accept Managed Payments and left Ebay.

after my last 250 listings sell.. im done selling on ebay ,,they dont protect sellers so i quit selling internationally..

always a disaster selling overseas... too bad there r no real alternatives , just my local classifieds , facebook marketplace has been moderately successful... bottom line is u cannot trust ebay or paypal... lots of folks make their own websites for the items they sell ,, that s probably what i will do,,,,,,,,,,,,good luck  nothing lasts 4 ever
