I refused to accept Managed Payments and left Ebay.

23 Years ago, a friend showed me this new website called Ebay.  I was immediately hooked.  I began buying and selling within weeks.

Back then, selling was a hassle because getting paid was a hassle.  Then came Paypal.

In my opinion, Paypal was the magic sauce that made Ebay work.

I sold on and off for the last 23 years.  I retired, and planned on using Ebay as a source of income in my retirement.

Over the recent years, my opinion of Ebay began to decline big time.

A couple of years ago, they instituted their GOOD TILL CANCELLED for Buy It Now listings.  I sold collectables and that policy KILLED my sales.  I tried to get the policy changed, but Ebay didn't care.  They were MANAGING my sales, and it killed me.

A couple of months ago, I was notified I was being forced into Managed Payments.  I read about the program, and didn't see any benefit for ME.

I spoke with several dedicated Managed Payments reps, and again, there was no benefit for me as a seller.  I clearly told every rep that the day Ebay forced MP on me was the day I would leave Ebay.

I begged to postpone to a later time.  Covid19 is rampant, and now isn't the time to add insult to injury.  They didn't care.

That day was Sept. 1.

So, as I sit here, a trusted friend I've had for 23 years is gone.  I removed all my listings, I'm no longer selling on Ebay.

Now, I understand Ebay could care less about me.  That's become obvious over the last several years.

If 10, or 100, or 1000 sellers leave, Ebay won't care.  BUT, if 10,000 or 100,000 leave, at some point, Ebay HAS to care.

I made my statement by leaving, and telling Ebay why I left.  If you feel as I do, make your own statement.  If Ebay is going to force sellers to choose MP, it should be better then Paypal.

Managed payments took a little getting used to, but I have no complaints now after several weeks up and running for me.  It actually simplifies a few things, as far as accounting goes, and it’s just a fact of life now.

Sure, I could complain about a whole bunch of things that eBay could do better.  I could complain A LOT more about selling on Amazon, but why bother?  Adapt and overcome, or put on your life jacket and get out of the boat.

The world is constantly changing, and human nature inherently does not like change.  Being in business for yourself should have taught you that by now.

Sellers who insult customers will eventually find their business destroyed and they will have no one but themselves to blame because most buyers uphold standards for sellers like basic customer service skills. All sellers inevitably have bad selling experiences but the professional ones don't publicly insult buyers which sends the message that they would be a nightmare to deal with if there was a problem. As for your last sentence, it can also be said that they have went so far down the seller stupidity spiral because I have lost count over how many times I have seen a seller who displays a poor attitude towards buyers and basically acts like buyers are a nuisance who sellers are doing a favor too by selling their items. It's the main reason why I now rarely buy on Ebay.

Actually, I routinely ban bad customers and have turned problematic before purchase customers away.

No skin off my back.

You can be a cheap floozy who will do whatever it takes to get a nickel from someone, but that isn’t the business model I subscribe to.  I would rather groom a clientele  base that has some sense, and who knows they will be treated well because they do!

Paypal does not offer Google Pay, Apple Pay, Alipay, and many others. Adyen the processor behind managed payments can accept over 200 types of payments.

Not exactly a good example.  Technically, E-Bay was a payment gateway.  Paypal was one of the paths through that gateway.  If E-Bay would want to have added Apple Pay, they could have, through their gateway.

Adyen is both a payment gateway and a payment processor.  You are correct that they are a robust payment gateway, while E-Bay's own gateway was very anemic.

If E-Bay would have wanted to, they could have broadened their gateway.  They could have even become a payment processor (so you could pay for stuff on Facebook with "E-Bay Pay").

Instead of doing something very technical, they just took the easy route of outsourcing to Adyen fill both roles for them.  And it gave them an upfront payment to help mask that they were having a negative revenue growth.

I don't necessarily have a problem Adyen.  My issues are the extra layers E-Bay is adding and the removal of options that E-Bay isn't allowing to be offered.

Example.  Adyen has Paypal as part of their gateway.  I can create a Paypal account.  Add Adyen to my e-commerce site, and accept Paypal payments.  Payments go through Adyen's gateway, and the funds end up in my Paypal account, no different than how E-Bay works today,

Adyen collects a $.10 transaction fee for sending the info through their gateway.  Paypal would collect their normal 2.9%+$.30.  The funds would then collect in my Paypal account.  Adyen gets $.10 for being a middle man that hands off a data record.

But even though this is basic functionality of Adyen, E-Bay will not allow it on the seller end, because E-bay then won't get to earn the interest for holding the money, and they won't get their portion of a larger transaction fee (they would get a portion of $.10 instead of a portion of $.25 + X%).

E-Bay could simply have included a check box that allows you to stick with Paypal, but you pay an extra fee per transaction or a higher monthly store fee.  The Adyen code is there that would allow it, but then E-Bay can't literally nickel the seller to death then.

E-Bay just sees sellers as an orange they can squeeze for third time, just to get one last drop into their glass full of juice.

not having the money right away, a dwindling balance in my PayPal account that I used to fund stock purchases (which means that I'll need to transfer money from my bank to PayPal).  I'm sure that others have different negatives.

All of these insults are ridiculous.

Congratulations on leaving eBay.
I bet the stress of selling on eBay will be leaving you soon.

I left 2 months ago because of managed payments. Seeing the people actually sending copies of their SS cards, bank statement and such.
(Yes Paypal and Stripe need ss# (not card copy) but they are professional payment processors. I refuse to go to selling sites that each want your personal information and not using the "hand shake" from Paypal or Stripe.)

Now to see the new update on returns, to see how peoples monies are being held longer and longer before payout is done.
It's funny that eBay still touts that it is only a selling platform, but boy, they have their fingers in every part of your selling.

I had re-opened my shops on eBid USA side back in March and it took a while to get the 4 shops listed and such. But I don't have the stress, I am now getting some sales and it's more enjoyable to sell again. Yes, I would love to have more sales, but not at the cost of paying eBay my soul.

I will say that I thank eBay for the money I did make and the learning experiences of selling. I had closed down my shops on eBid because of not having enough sales and to learn from them. Now I have a better knowledge of what to do or NOT to do.

Why take the time to write all this encouraging others to "make a statement" but not offer any alternative ideas? Fine~ I've got my arms crossed and I'm pouting, ebay doesn't care one bit. Any ideas on how I can make my income now that I've just thrown a tissyfit and quit? All of the other online venues use a similar form of MP.

Being a quitter always feels better when you can get others to join you.

sure, but ebay has almost no benefits; The Paypal setup and the lack of required personal banking and identity information for the sellers safety and protection was the main benefit left for sellers on eBay as they all eroded over the last couple decades. By taking that away why would anyone stay on the under-performing eBay and not do all sales though Amazon and Facebook? There are now no distinguishing benefits to eBay over any other marketplace. Anyone that remains on eBay after this change is making a seriously bad business decision. Also, If you are selling as a casual yard sale type seller, why would you want to give your checking account and social security information? Would you give that to someone at a yard sale? or even an auction? I do a lot of in person auctions - which this site originally mimicked, and I have never been asked for my banking information or identity for any purchases under $10,000. eBay is no longer a yard sale site, no longer the biggest customer base online marketplace, no longer the cheapest place to sell, no longer the most protected site identity wise. Unless/Until they drastically drop selling fees, or some other benefit to selling after the change , I  cannot think of one reason to sell on eBay (other than I have 15 years of 100% positive feedback- but what is that worth? eBay seems to think $0)

Bonanza is a pay to play site and has been following in eBay's footsteps, but one must remember that Bonanza was created those many years ago, for disgruntled eBay sellers...

As for eCrater, I see that site remaining a "dinosaur" for years to come=A basic site, basic features and tools, low fees, accepts PayPal and Stripe as payment methods...a site where I have set up shop and where my sales have surpassed those here on eBay...
