How to stop the automatic payment method for buyers

I am a buyer I have bought 300+ items on ebay in the last 3 years but yesterday August 5 at 4:53pm I was put in this stupid test by ebay of the sample buyers what have to have a automatic payment method to make a offer or bid on anything and if I win a bid I am automatically charged this is unethical really my cc card on file for ebay purchases I allways use to pay for my purchases should not be charged this is bul*sh** and wrong

I allways pay on time in less then 2 days

Is there anyway I can opt out of this test group of buyers

And another thing with the automatic payment method I CANNOT combine shipping if I buy more than 1 item from a seller so if I buy more than 1 item from the same seller I pay a da*n boatload extra for shipping

This automatic payment method is the stupidest thing I have ever heard and seen

And ebay never even mentioned this to buyers , or sellers most people don't even know about it this is a scam/shaddy as hel* business practices

This a lawsuit waiting to happen people

I went to ebay chat online and I talked to a ebay representative and she told the only way to get rid of this is to ask the seller I want to buy from to turn it off on there seller account or put me on an exception list from there seller account

She also told me if thay won't then every offer or bid or bid and win a item I will be automatically charged method

Does anybody else have this problem or just me can somebody advise or help me please

And PS: I am only a buyer I have never sold on ebay

How did you delete the payment method? When I tried to do this, it wouldn't let me unless I added another valid payment method in its place.

Great point! OMG, I hadn't thought about returns, chargebacks, lost shipping costs, PayPal claims, and refund requests. Imagine the automatic payment is made, you pack it up, pay for a shipping label, and maybe get as far shipping only to get a cancellation/refund request. If the seller says tough luck, I already shipped it, the buyer will do a chargeback, will return it, or will file a complaint through PayPal alleging some problem like item doesn't match description and the seller has to eat all those fees and costs (ebay loses nothing though). Sellers who use automatic payments could be stuck paying shipping (and possibly return shipping), ebay auction and PP fees. chargeback fees, the cost of the item in a return/refund, the costs of items returned damaged, and have a claim/problem/return on their PP account. Plus, sellers could end up with negative feedback from buyers who're really angry about the automatic charges (there will be a lot of these!)

If you are charged more than what you and the seller agreed to in writing, you can contact your bank to do a chargeback for the difference. Or, do this with PayPal by starting a case/complaint, uploading the documentation/messages showing the correct price, and request an adjustment. Most honorable sellers will issue an adjustment in a case like this because they did agree to one amount while ebay charged you a different amount.

Make sure you and the seller are on the same page and you get everything in writing. This way, you can get an adjustment/partial refund (will take a lot of time and effort though) or you can use the incorrect total to request a seller paid return and full refund because you were charged an amount that was different from what any reasonable person would assume was the total as listed.

Here are a couple of solutions (admittedly less than ideal but at least they work) from another forum: Change automatic payment method to a credit card where you have contacted bank and blocked ebay and PayPal from making charges to it. Add card first, once added to ebay as automatic payment method, then call bank to block them. You will have to update the payment method after end of auction, but at least this way you get to know exact amount, when it will be charged, and can decide what card will be used for that particular transaction.

Similar method: Use maxed out card so no additional charges can be made. Can use debit card attached to bank account with no money in it too. Pretty much, same as above.

Probably, other variations on the above, but you get the idea. Other users report the payment method must be a valid one or else ebay won't let you add it for automatic payments. Some banks offer virtual, single transaction credit/debit card numbers where you can specify the total amount so this might be an option to protect yourself from extra and unexpected charges.

How to stop the automatic payment method for buyers

I am a seller and on occasion a buyer. if I make an offer I always pay immediately. A couple of things today that I was made aware of while I was searching for a specific pair of Eileen Fisher pants. First of all when I put my item in the search, very specifically stating, Eileen Fisher Organic Linen Flat Front Pants Large, I did not have the option to sort by size. So I had to go through all the pants that fell into that search one by one. I did find two pair.

Now to answer your question, I have removed the payment upfront thing from my requirements on my listings. I do not have an issue with people paying. However as a buyer I had to go through that whole dance of putting in a payment method, PayPal I was using, even though it is on file in my eBay account. Then I submitted my offer, and yes it was accepted, and the seller was paid. However the seller would have been paid anyway.

So I do understand why ebay is doing this, but as I said before most people are good, and do pay..so I totally get where you are coming from. As previously mentioned I removed that requirement sometime ago, as it does seem quite irritating to the buyer.  I AGREE WITH YOU.

Many online platforms value user feedback. You can try providing feedback through eBay's official channels regarding your dissatisfaction with the new automatic payment method. This might not lead to immediate changes, but it could potentially contribute to improvements in the system over time.
Often, other users facing similar issues might share their experiences and solutions on eBay's community forums. You could search these forums to see if others have found workarounds or solutions to the problem you're facing.

If buyers are  not happy, less activity and business for sellers..good buyers who spend a lot of money ( and have money), definitely don’t like it and have other options…

If some sellers going to require autopay, they’re really going to hurt business wise…only mediocre/ small time sellers without any basic understanding how sales work, can endorse this kind of nonsense..p.s. been in the business for many years dealing with sales in millions and know very well how it works…

Trust me, I have unchecked both those boxes. I also check my Buyer requirements at least once a week to make sure eBay has tinkered with anything else. If a seller wants to use the Buyer Requirements I have no problem with that, but I believe there should be something on the listing page by the price that states that seller requires Immediate payment for all BIN, BO and/or Auctions. I have contacted many sellers who had no idea eBay implemented this policy on them.

Just got off the phone with customer service and they confirmed that ebay gift cards can only be used on Buy it Now items. If sellers use the autopay feature you do not have the option of using your gift cards.

@blueduece58   I wasn't aware of it either until I checked my Buyer Requirements page and sure enough it was there and turned on.  I don't know if that negatively affected any sales from when they added it and I noticed it ... nobody messaged me about it so I am thinking I caught it pretty early.

I think for some categories it will be a great addition to cut down on UPIs and certain scams ... I don't use the Offer feature on my listings but will occasionally Reply with offer to some messages.  I sell a lot Auction style but my UPIs are I think around 1/2 of 1%, rather low in my opinion and most items will eventually sell anyway.

How to stop the automatic payment method for buyers

Hello,   ...Ebay .. ??

This isn't happenning. In almost 15 years buying on ebay I have NEVER not payed. You let sellers decide not to sell if the winning bid isn't high enough for them, and now your gonna let sellers control buyers accounts with this latest scheme ? No, you don't get access to my paypal account, if linking to paypal to allow us buyers to authorize payment like you've always done isn't acceptable anymore, I'll find somewhere else to shop.

@6831robert   This isn't eBay and they don't make a habit of coming here and reading threads.  Your opinion has value and I would encourage you to contact eBay directly and voice your displeasure.

For myself I see this as a good feature from the standpoint of cutting down on certain Buying scams and Unpaid items on Auctions.  Not every Buyer is as honest as you are with making payments for items you win on auction or the result of the Best offer process.

However, like most new features it is a work in progress and has limited flexibility.  In time it will allow Buyers to select their payment method prior to making an offer or bidding on auctions.

How to stop the automatic payment method for buyers

So yeah same here, I like to pick my paypal option depending of the price and my current bank situation.

Paypal credit

Paypal pay in 4

Paypal pay in 12 or24.

I noticed a while back that when paying with paypal the the credit option is not available until you get on the paypal page.

My account was created in France and I have been in the US for 17 years so I thought it was maybe linked to that but that automatic charged is a bummer....I set up again by picking paypal credit but I don't know if that will work.

I heard cancelling your method after the offer or bid may work but if you need to bid again it will ask for your info.

Things like that if not picked up by some web news outlet and get repeated may not change...News  about people not happy could Impact people investing in their stocks that s what matter to them....but not sure what internet news cover Ebay...

How to stop the automatic payment method for buyers

A few weeks ago I was starting to bid on an item when a screen came up stating to agree to the automatic payment ! I tried I tried to get out of agreeing to it but then I was not allowed to bid on the item, so then I did agree so that I would be able to bid ! As it turned out I was charged a shipping fee for each item that I had won in the auction resulting in overpaying the "normal combined" shipping fee !

I then requested a refund from the seller for the overpaid shipping fees explaining what had happened and the seller was not very happy about my request and  bluntly told me that I need to wait for an invoice with the combined shipping !

So this automatic payment nonsense is a terrible idea for not just the buyer but also the seller !
