We have had a coupe of items sold and the Buyers did not pay. Ebay automatically cancelled the orders. The Seller used to be able to open an Unpaid Item Reminder, allowing Buyer more time to pay. Now it just cancels the order Why?

After 4 days of nonpayment, eBay automatically cancels the order on the 5th day, as you have authorized.
Your final value fee is refunded. The buyer then has a "strike". Two "strikes" in twelve months will mean that most smart sellers have set their requirements so they do not have to deal with that buyer.

@goldenstripcoins123 This changed in May 2021 (https://community.ebay.com/t5/Announcements/New-cancel-function-for-unpaid-items/ba-p/31848079)
Apparently you can go here and turn the unpaid item assistant on and off to your liking:

There is a setting in our Site Preferences that allows the Cancellations for Non Payment to be filed automatically. For those that don't want it to be automatic, make sure you turn this off.

I did alter my sellers preferences but ebay still cancelled an order with buyer with whom I had an arrangement to hold the item pending further purchases. Reputable buyers who now have a strike against them, I am r=tearing my hair out

Did you "alter" your preferences after the purchase was made? It's possible that "altering policy" would apply to future transactions, but not for current sales.

I had one order ancelled by ebay when I had agreed the buyer could wait until payday. So I checked my buyer preferences and altered them so that no mor cancellations without reference to me.
Now it has happened again. I am at my wits end as these buyers will now have srikes against them.

Sounds like you have your account set up to automatically issue a Cancellation for non payment after 96 hours from purchase. Ebay does NOT auto cancel these transaction, but if you have YOUR account to auto close them, they will.

Did you remember to click on the SAVE button after you turned the toggle on the right off.
