New purchases #2

My new N scale Shay should be here soon. I think that June is the Canadian F7 release also. B-)

Re: New purchases #2

Dave, I worked part time at a Hobbytown USA in Phoenix for a short while. They are mostly an R/C oriented store. The rest of the stuff suffers as a result. We did have a good selection of paints though as you said, but being a franchise, it was hard for me to get any good train stuff in the store unless I went behind the owner's back, which I did often. I finally left and went to the Hobby Bench where I became "the train guy". I thought Testors stopped making metalizer paints long ago. B-)

Picked up pair of Bar Mills bilboards, a TL&H Scenics four pole billboard and an old Concor Cargill four bay covered hopper while in Fort Worth earlier this year. Got them at Angelo Hobbies. I sure wish the were my LHS. Kevin

A friend went dumpster diving for me and I have ended up with about $200 worth of buildings... not all that pristine, but stuff that can be bashed and repainted into something nicer. I also got a handful of old atlas 40 ft box cars, an old LifeLike GP-38 (in need of soldering the wires back on the trucks) and a mishandled, gummed up but otherwise pristine Lifelike SW1200, in that perfect Southern paint scheme... not bad for free stuff.. I know... it isn't really a purchase, but it is new to me! Kevin

Re: New purchases #2

Had a few items for sale on consignment at LHS so got some cash for that so brought home my MTL BN boxcar and put the rest towards the MTL province loco I have on layaway. Also picked up a couple turnouts (NIP) for $10 each from the consignment display case. Not sure when I will use them other than I will need them when I do some more trackwork so good price as they are $23 here. Also picked up a "CAST" container for my intermodal container cars. Shouldn't have gotten into that rolling stock but I don't regret it as I see them here all the time. Breaks the monotony of boxcars.

Re: New purchases #2

my prder came in for "the Cyclopedia of Industrial Modelling" by Dean Freytag. It's a nice book but disappointing too as the cover shows grain silos and the book is entirely on building a super detailed steel mill facility. Might have to spend the money and order the Plastruc book on industrial structures. It was 50 USD though.

Got me an Atlas C630 decked out in L&N and a GP38 decked out in Clinchfield in the mail yesterday. Got a Lifelike GP-20 mechanism in the mail today... now where are those GP-18 bodies all painted up for Norfolk Southern?? Man... I miss consignment sales... or at least the deals you once could find there. Dave you have an awesome LHS. Treasure it while it lives. Kevin

Re: New purchases #2

I bought some peoples, WS type, for the layout and some CA glue at half the price I pay in Canada. Couldn't find much else to stir my desire to spend money in the local shops. What a shame. Maybe on-line is still the answer. I went to the supposed largest hobby shop in the world, their claim, and was sorely mistreated as a customer. I asked them to run a new Athearn N scale Challenger for me and the clerk said I must be kidding. I said if he wanted me to spend $382 he damn well better run it for me. Well, after he begrudgingly cleaned the stock off his test track, the damn thing ran so fast, even on DCC that he couldn't control it. And the sound....totally crappy as far as I am concerned. You just can't make a small speaker sound good, the thought I have had all along. I wouldn't waste my money on one. Mostly because the sound is weak. I like my shake the walls speakers in the O scale stuff. TheStingyFadda

Just did a BIN for a Walthers Difco ballast car for the MOWHEY. Also have my eye on the Arcade and Attica boxcar recently advertised in Model railroader for one of the freight consists that I have. Does anyone know of N Scale old timer passenger cars probably of the 1920's or earlier? I Am thinking of a consist of the Precision Craft M1b and an old timer passenger consist (that is if the PC M1b is ever brought to market!). Gene

Re: New purchases #2

Just a few Railbox boxcar's renumbered for Missouri Pacific from eBay. And a couple '55 chevy's from the LHS. Still reworking the new train room and getting ready for another family reunion in Sept for her relatives. Clean make a mess, clean make a mess, etc. continues for another month and a half. Lou

Re: New purchases #2

What a lousy shop Pete to ask you if you were kidding about wanting to see train run. Who goes and looks at a new family car and buys it without a test drive. yeesh. My LHS will show off a newly receieved loco to me even though he knows I won't buy it as it isn't my scheme like steamers. All the largest stock in a store won't sell with crappy service.
