i saw the static display of the big boy and the centennial (DD40X) at the hillside park (Kennetfleck Park~ spelling?) coming into Omaha. Both locos are HUGE. Couldn't even get one loco in the frame on camera. Big boy must been a pig for major maintenance, nothing is small on it.

What an amazing endeavour, just wish I could see it for real, hopefully there will be DVDs of any runs.

Trains magazine has a video of the moving of the Big-Boy from its static display to the rails. There was a big ceremony. A DVD will be available of the restoration too apparently.  I assume that the Big-Boy will be used along side the FEF3 that was restored already. Pentax has some great DVDs all about the Big-Boys in their hay day.

I actually have nearly all the big boy DVDs from pentrax, some interesting viewing, not quite like the real thing, the sounds and the smells would totally be something else.

An impressive machine, nice there are train lovers working at the UP not just a bunch of business managers who "know how to run a business" (into the ground along with all involved...).  (PS, sorry for anyone who is a business manager stuck reading my comments...)

All the best,

Charles

The Trains Magazine guys seem to be tracking the Big Boy (I don't have a subscription but somehow get an email newsletter):

http://trn.trains.com/Railroad%20News/News%20Wire/2014/04/Trains%20magazine%20to%20live%20stream%20U...

This article says "Beginning on Monday, April 28, Trains magazine will live stream Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014’s 11-day journey from Colton, Calif., to Cheyenne, Wyo." if you are a subscriber.

All the best,

Charles

How about a guest locomotive down here in Cumberland, Maryland:

We were driving around and these guys were sitting there on the CSXT (old B&O) line just west of Cumberland, a Canadian Pacific no. 8877, and Norfolk Southern no. 8993 leading a couple CSXT's.

All the best,

Charles

I haven't seen or heard a train in 14 years........oh. That's right. We don't have trains on the Rock anymore.  Nevermind.

Pete,

You just gota build your own 1:1 railroad on the island, it would have realistic grass, trees and snow!    And built in sound too...

All the best,

Charles

There was talk of trying to revamp the "Trinity Loop" at one time. It is a circle of track that loops over itself and was part of the original mainline at one time. Someone bought it and had a speeder that ran on it for a while, but the interest was just not there and the public did not come and now it is in the weeds. There are several diesels on display but they probably are too far gone to restore. Cars are available too, but again in sad shape.

I tried to get Kim to let me build a 1" live steam railroad in the yard, but once she found out about the cost........well, you know the rest of that story. Now our small club is trying to get the historical society in the town to back a model display in the new 8 million dollar interpretation center. They have the room and have asked us for info on the railway since we have already done the research, however, they are reluctant to donate the space and some dough. Therefore, we are slow in providing the research. I think a live steam scale ride-on display at the center would be a draw.

The old railbed is now being developed as a walking/biking trail. All motorized vehicles have been banned from it. Finally. The dirt bikers really tore up the railbed over the years.

I saw couple areas shaed on my road atlas in colorado just NE of Pueblo. one being Pueblo Cemical Depot and the other just northof that titled Transportation technology Ctr- Federal RR Admin.

Go to Google maps and select satelite image and go to these co-ords-  38.44389   -104.290513

zoom in/out as necessary. If you zoom out enough and go to map mode it is a spegetti bowl of tracks.

Coords above shows something interesting with a string of cars. (in satelite mode)

Dave,

Interesting for sure, there is some track with a 3rd outside rail, and a loop...  (which I hope pasted in this message).
