Has anyone used Brick Morter from Roberts' Products Co.? I am looking to be able to create a realistic brick look of a weathered brick building. I have some brick sheets and want to eventually build a building covered with brick but need to know the best way to get the sheet material to look more ah er bricky. Dot had a brick building in a photo album somewhere and if you can remember it, that is the look I am after. I guess my question is what is the best way to get brick sheet material to look more natural with morter lines and aging. Gene

Gene, I love Roberts Mortar. They have several shades of mortar too. If the brick sheets you buy have a little indentation in the mortar lines, that is what you need. You just trowel on the Roberts and wipe it off the surface with a damp cloth or paper towel. This way you leave the mortar in the lines and also a slight dusty film on the brick face too to give it that aged look. Just so you know, yo can do the same thing with drywall mud but you only get one color, grey. I usually seal the mortar with Dullcote. B-)

Thanks for the info Pete. Three more questions: 1. Where is the stuff available and 2. Is one ounce really able to cover a lot or is there quite a bit of waste and the larger size would be advisable. I don't plan on much brick work buildings maybe one or two N Scale buildings. 3. What are the shades? Gene

You can mix latex paint right in with your drywall mud to achieve the color you want. That is how I do textured ceilings. It's a one step process, no painting when the mud is dry! CJ]:)

CJ, I used to have alot of drywall mud when I first moved in to the new house but have since used it all up. I just may have to get some more. I can always use some somewhere. I still have plenty of paint! Gene

I just received my Model Railroading Mag. and noticed a colored pencil article on creating brick looking buildings. I think the drywall mud or the Roberts Mortar sounds easier. Gene

i used some pieces of sheetrock that I crumbled into dust and wiped it on and then wiped off leaving dust in the grooves. Also used acrylic paint in same fashion. dave

I think Robert's is out of business. Where did you come up with their name? B-)

I don't usually get the MRN until the end of the month, but I found the ad in Dec. issue. There is no web site mentioned, but the ad says Caboose Hobbies and that is the link I sent you. They used to have white, grey, aged concrete and black. Check with Caboose Hobbies. B-)

Gene, Did you speak to my buddy Chip when you ordered? He usually does the mail order stuff. Next time you want good service, ask for Chip directly when you call in. Now you are going to make me guess what color mortar you ordered.......grey? 1oz will not last you very long. And here's a tip. If you feel it is drying out, add a teaspoon of distilled water to it to remoisten the mortar. Also, stir it each time before you use it to distribute the existing moisture throughout the product. Popsickle sticks make great stirers you know. TheMortarFadda

Pete, I ordered on the website you directed me to. There was no color, just said 1 0z or the larger size. There was no charge for shipping but I am not going to complain. I also ordered several figure type packages for the beach and I made a volleyball net and needed some more players and spectators. Also got some farmers market stuff for the town of Whey square. Also am getting some things for Toolulas Tools. Mostly I am getting detail stuff. I am also looking at the Kato V3 yard package. Don't know if it will be made in N Scale but I could use it off of the far lakeside end if I added an 18" by 5' extension along side the existing extension. Gene
