eBay, please help prevent the greedy scalping

Anonymous
Not applicable

So I know about the PS5, Xbox Series X, GeForce RTX 30 Series, and Radeon RX 6000 Series scalping. Everyone, if you are a scalper, please stop. There are much better ways to make money than scalping. It is immoral, and I don't know if you agree with me but it should be illegal.

Some of you may say, "In businesses, the company pays to manufacture things and resell them for profit." I am completely aware that is true, and I have no problem with that. But scalpers buy items that have already been assembled, and sell them at blown up prices. And the problem is, the items they scalp are ones people want most(see the top line).

"Oh, but you don't need those things. Be grateful for what you have. They are needs, not wants." Please, this is not a reason not to get mad. PS5s, Xbox Series Xs, and gaming PCs are meant for entertainment. And video games are probably one of the best ways for entertainment.

You may ask, "Why not just buy it from the retailers? That way you won't spend more money than you need to." Well the scalpers make the retailers go out of stock everywhere. Especially considering how they use bots, so as soon as stock comes in they get bought up immediately. We can't buy it in person either, as the pandemic makes console selling online-only.

Everyone, if you are a scalper, please stop. And if you are a person who is considering buying from a scalper... DON'T. Buying from scalpers only encourages them to continue.

Since Xgames are not essential items, it is not scalping. A seller can charge what they want..noone is forced to buy here.

I know I'm old school, but I've never needed a gaming system for entertainment.

Have a great day.

It does not need to be essential to be scalping. Buying event tickets and concert tickets is not essential but scapling them is actually illegal.

Push a line to far and a law will get made.

Its bad business to alow scalpers as every customer starts thier experience off in a far wprse mood far more critical and much more upset if anything goes wrong.

Spend one day and 400 on somthing and it does not work your upset but ypu send it back and get another in days your ok.

Spend weeks and $1,500 on a $400 item and it does not work and then you have to argue with some dbag and have to get lucky to get money back then have to spend more weeks for another "chance" to spend $1,500  on it.

You really think your gonna be as impressed by it after all that? Do you think youll want to buy the next item they make?

These business are fools for not doing more to stop scalpers

Who do you propose should set "reasonable"profit percentages for sellers ? Should it be 50%, 10%, 1%, or nothing at all ? If an item is priced too high, an item will not sell. Doesn't matter wether it is an x-box, stereo speakers, or a lawn mower. There are two or three new trucks I would like. Should someone tell the manufacturers to lower the price, or should over supply and low demand force the prices lower ? It's not scalping. It is called making a profit from a transaction.

@Anonymous   Personally I think eBay should impose their State's Anti Price gouging law ... but only for NEEDS like during the National Emergency Pandemic last year ... for things like hand sanitizer eBay's solution was not to let Sellers sell it ... REALLY?!?  How utterly stupid when they have laws in place to regulate prices.  That in my view was a bonehead move on their part.  As to "WANTS" like gaming units, that's a different story ... if one doesn't want to pay a high price then keep shopping ... next year at this time they will be worth 1/2 of what they are now ...

@bonjourami  You're not an eBay expert or a moderator yet you leave a lot of replies. From what I have observed they lack validity and and are often in disregard of the truth or the interests of others. I understand that you dont have anything to lose.

Yes, of course there is 'scalping' event tickets, but that is not in the context of what the op is complaining about. Selling high priced Xgames on Ebay is not 'scalping'.

Yes it is it is 100% scalping by definition just because you like to do it does not make it not scalping. Again why is it illegal to do it with event tickets? Why has the ftc wasted time tracking down scalpers and punished them for tickets.

No one is saying you cant make a profit what they are saying is you cant go into the dealership and buy every car in the entire cpuntry then sell them for 3x profit.

Theres a huge gap between those too that still let people sell the one card they have. Again scalping event tickets is illegal in the usa for a reason. We long ago recognized scalpers as garbage human beings

What percentage over retail would be considered "Scalping"? Would the No Scalping rule apply to everything new or just "Popular" items? Who will decide? How long would the No Scalping Rule remain in effect for an item? What about future items that increase in value in a year, five years, ten years, would the No Scalping Rule apply as well? What about used items! Can I sell a used PS5 for more than retail? If the rule applies to used, how long would it remain in effect?

Id like to respond but your train of thought has completely lost me here...what does this have to do with selling Xboxes on Ebay?

The solution is really simple.  Don't buy from scalpers.  It's not an essential item.  Buy it from the authorized retailer only at MSRP.  You can't blame eBay for bad buying decisions.

This is a community discussion board for eBay users.  It's a support method for buyers and sellers to ask questions.  eBay policies are not determined by board users as they can only communicate information based on eBay's current policies to answer questions or resolve issues.

The sale and purchase of non essential items isn't subject to eBay's price gouging policies.  There are times where eBay may step in and restrict sales of some sellers for various reasons, but no one can prevent what you deem scalping.    Market prices fluctuate depending on demand.    Nonetheless, sellers of non essential items can list and sell for whatever price they want.  For example  some sellers believe that corning ware is extremely rare and have it listed as high as $34,000.  Chances that they can sell it and actually get paid?  None.

Scalpers who list with auctions run the risk of sport bidders who bid high, but never pay.  If they use Best Offers  the same can occur with buyers making offers that they never pay.  Anytime there is a popular  item which isn't subject to price gouging or Vero where the demand exceeds the supply there will be people who want to capitalize on the demand which creates high prices and nothing will stop it.
