ebay enabling Scalping causing normal consumers to be unable to buy products

Scalping is unethical because it artificially marks up items over their actual value, barring anyone but the ultra-rich from something that should be available to normal consumers. Please ban the sale of scalped goods resold within the first 6 months of their release. eBay will not necessarily be monetarily rewarded for doing so, but it is the right thing to do and eBay's consumer base will know that.

Because of eBay's active promotion of scalping by serving as an open haven for scalpers, I am unable to build a computer that needed the latest graphics cards. Graphics cards on eBay are ranging from 20%-100% price markup relative to what sellers charge for the item new.

Please end scalping eBay, and please do not shift the blame.

Blaming eBay is already shifting the blame.

Just keep searching dealers on the net an on ebay.  No, the "ultra rich" can't buy them all and risk loss if they can't resell them.  High tech has a short "shelf life" before a newer model comes along.

I'm not sure I follow your use of the term "scalping."  While I'm familiar with it in the context of tickets to sporting or entertainment events, I'm not quite sure how it would apply here.

Alas!  It is quite a true fact that those with deep pockets can usually get what they want more easily than those of us with finite budgets, but that has always been the case in this world.

It seems that what you refer to as "scalping" is actually people with more money buying things that you want before you can buy them.  I don't see how eBay would be able to restrict people from doing that.  Of course, it sounds like a matter of supply and demand which would be up to the manufacturers and retail outlets to control.  This is, of course, assuming that your complaint is about sellers sourcing desirable items in limited supply on a first come first serve basis.

it would seem that you are complaining about sellers with items you want but can't afford, but other buyers with more disposable income and/or available cash can and are willing to pay the price...

while you may see that as being unfair, nothing wrong with it...

That's life  & no one ever said it would be fair...

Luxury items/non-essential items can be sold at any price...supply & demand...

no point in blaming eBay for items priced &/or selling higher than you can  &/or are willing to pay....

but let it go since there is nothing unethical or illegal here...

 simply move on ...

To you, maybe, "normal consumers" are people worried about being priced out of a temporary market for the latest and greatest game or gaming component or electronic gadget.

I'd say that for most "normal consumers" right now, the worry is how to stretch this month's paycheck to cover food, clothing, shelter, basic utilities, transportation, and medical care.

I am unable to build a computer also. How did you learn how to do it?

Buy them somewhere where they are better priced. It is your right to shop around. I am not suggesting any specific place.

So you are saying that eBay shouldn't allow sales of products that are less than 6 months from release date? How ridiculous is that?

Or are you saying that eBay should limit how much sellers can charge over retail price? How ridiculous is that?

Do you get upset that retail stores also mark up products over what they pay for them? How ridiculous is that?

Ebay has no control over prices of non-essential items.

Buyers control prices...if there are buyers willing to pay high prices, then sellers will charge whatever they think buyers will pay.

Snipping has been around since day one and it will not change. Shop Amazon, I do.

It is not "scalping". It is simply the law of supply and demand. Who do you propose putting in charge of determining how much a seller can sell a particular item for ?  Eventually the prices of things level out, especially when talking about electronics and electronics parts. Feel free to shop for those graphics cards elsewhere.

Please explain to me what sort of computer NEEDS the latest graphics cards.  Even AAA games don't require the latest graphics cards to run; that would be idiocy considering that the vast majority of people who want to play those games won't have the newest graphics cards.

@javentimi0,

"Scalping is unethical because it artificially marks up items over their actual value, barring anyone but the ultra-rich from something that should be available to normal consumers".

So according to you,  any retail business who charges more than the wholesale price of the items on their shelves is "scalping"?

The reason why ticket scalping is illegal in some states is because some courts have ruled, that an artist or venue, owns the rights to enter the venue, or to the performance itself, and only  sellers authorized by them have the rights to sell those tickets.  Similarly, Price gouging, does not apply to what you feel is wrong, because those laws only covers essential items needed to live after a disaster of some sort.

Many companies resort to introducing new products in times of high demand, in a limited quantity (the holidays).  By doing that they can keep the wholesale price high, and it allows the resellers to make a greater profit.  Those who wait for the second production run to be brought to market can often get the products for less than the Mfr's. current MSuggestedRP.

As someone mentioned earlier tech moves so quickly that this year's latest and greatest will be supplanted by next year, and really is there a big enough difference between last year's product and the new one? Is last year's graphic card significantly faster or sharper than the newest one, and will that matter if your placing it on a computer with and older display screen?   If most people are happy with last year's card, buy those at a much lower price.
