When paying using paypal, funds come directly from linked bank account instead of credit card

A couple of weeks ago Ebay started taking funds immediately upon winning instead of the buyer clicking to pay after they've won.   I'm not a seller, only a buyer, and I can understand why sellers like this but now instead of posting to my credit card which is my preferred method which I pay off every month it takes out immediately from my linked bank account.   I have a credit card just for all the ebay buying I do, it makes a simple monthly report, now I have to go look at every transaction through my bank.    I don't care that the money charges immediately when I win or buy it now, but is there any way to make it go back to credit card?   I can only guess they did this cause maybe it gets the sellers their money a day earlier, I don't know but I don't much like it.

I had the same problem today. I called PayPal and they told me it is a subscription, and they (PayPal) cancelled it for me. I am leery to use my eBay account. Good luck

I'm not sure how it could be considered a subscription.  I win something and it immediately takes money through paypal but when I check later it's not on the credit card, it's taken out of my linked bank account.   It's not a recurring charge or anything.

Go to your account at paypal.com and select Wallet. That will allow you to select your preferred payment source, which is the one eBay should default to.

I checked that before posting the thread, it's defaulted to the credit card like it has been for many years.   But it's pulling straight from the bank account the card is linked to, not posting to the card.   Seems to be some ebay glitch ever since they started making payments go through immediately.    I'm not getting screwed over on the money, I just liked the way it used to be cause it made tracking expenditures easier for me.

Why not pay directly with your card?  That's what I do.  As soon as that option became available a few years ago I kicked Paypal to the curb as far as buying goes.

Re: When paying using paypal, funds come directly from linked bank account instead of credit card

Well, to be honest, it never occurred to me lol.   I set it up this way over 15 years ago when all I used was debit cards.   I've only recently (a year ago) started using credit cards for the extra layer of protection, which was the reason I set up paypal for the debit card.    When I got the credit card I deleted the debit card from the payment methods and it's worked the same.   So, I guess I don't really need paypal protection anymore, although I have had to use paypal to mediate a couple of bad deals where things didn't go well so it still a nice thing to have I guess, at least as far as ebay purchases go.

Hi @manchacofficerepair

I just removed by bank account from PayPal based on your post.

I also prefer paying with a credit card … and only added my bank account to PayPal because eBay demanded it at one time.  eBay also demanded that our bank account be set as our Preferred payment method … so I had to manually change it for each eBay purchase.  [That requirement was changed years ago.]

I assume eBay is trying to avoid the fees charged by credit cards … but they really shouldn’t ignore our preferences.  I can always add my bank account to PayPal should I ever want to send cash to a family member.

I too took Pay-Pal out of the equation and use my linked credit/debit card for payments. You are going to get the same protection using your credit card and is one less thing to worry about, such as what is going on here because you can pick your funding source at the time of payment.

If there was a need, I could still add Pay-Pal back as a funding source but as I don't keep any money there. Why would I need them as a just pass through payment processor when I am getting the same protection through my linked credit card?

Pay-Pal is a separate entity, so dropping it from eBay does not close your Pay-Pal account and it can still be used to send money for family or other non-eBay uses. Two of the national antique car clubs I am a member of use Pay-Pal to process yearly dues.

Thanks @redmodelt  … but I didn’t unlink my PayPal account from eBay.  [It’s my only payment source linked to eBay, and I prefer to keep it that way.]

I merely removed my bank account from PayPal’s Wallet (via paypal.com) so that my credit card  is the only payment source eBay can use if/when I am pulled into the ‘prepayment group’ … just in case eBay started ignoring what we’ve set as our Preferred PayPal payment source.

Re: When paying using paypal, funds come directly from linked bank account instead of credit card

@manchacofficerepair,

I ran into a similar issue a few weeks ago when I had to enter a payment option to make an offer.  When I did that I didn't think to change my default / primary PayPal payment method. So my debit card was used automatically.  It was the first time in over a year I made an offer.

What you can do when buying on ebay using your ebay only credit card, is to make sure it is your PayPal primary payment method before you make an offer or have to enter a payment method. I did that for payments I have made since then, and my credit card was used, instead of my debit card when auto payments were made.

Well, seems ebay fixed the issue on their own.  I ordered something a couple days ago and watched closely, this time it posted to the credit card and not drawn from bank so everything seems to be back to normal. I never changed anything regarding paypal or ebay payment methods, it just happened all by itself both times, go figure.   Thanks for the replies

Re: When paying using paypal, funds come directly from linked bank account instead of credit card

Old thread, but to add some clarity for people just finding it now, the first reply is correct. Confusingly, PayPal allows you to set a preferred payment method, BUT eBay is listed as a subscription in PayPal, and subscriptions have their own preferred payment methods that take priority. On PayPal, go to settings->Payments->Automatic payments. Select eBay Inc. (You might have to click more if there's a bunch of others listed.) You can then click Change Payment Method there. You might also want to change eBay Inc Shipping, which is listed separately. Annoyingly, if the payment method selected fails, it'll use something else without asking you which one to use.
