Weird eBay Seller

Anyone know what is going on with this eBay seller?  I won an old newspaper and he's claiming it costs a lot more than $3 to send it and that you have to pay for tracking. Is he just B-S'ing me and not wanting to sell it or what?

Re: Weird eBay Seller

I was basing my comment on the OP's original assertion that it doesn't cost more than $3 to ship a newspaper.  The OP's later comment re "He emailed me saying that it would be costing more than the specified price of $3.82 shipping + $0.99 item bid" does make it sound like the seller was asking for additional shipping funds. We don't have the whole story.

Re: Weird eBay Seller

That IS the whole story. I won the item for 99 cents, before I paid and while I was asleep (auction ended at like 5am my time) the seller emailed saying it would cost more than $3 to ship a newspaper, I told him that cannot be so - its a newspaper - and he replied back with the spiel about paying for tracking and all that implying that he would not even ship the item. I just paid a moment ago, so if he cancels that's on him. No big loss to me.  I posted this reply in hopes other buyers would have had this happen before and know what to do and if I should pay or cancel when dealing with a difficult seller, as this one was new to me.

He didn't get enough for it so he is trying to weasel his way out of the sale.

Up to you if you want to let him do that or not by asking to cancel and refund, (I wouldn't) or wait and claim INR and leave feedback.

It not your issue that the seller has listed the incorrect shipping service nor the incorrect shipping price. It is not your fault the seller did not get what he wanted for the item, and he should suck it up for the sake of customer service and his own reputation.

Re: Weird eBay Seller

Don't let it bother you. In my experience, most sellers  who make mistakes like this will honor the sale and ship without complaint. Even if you offer to let them cancel.

If you're up to it, send this to the seller.

"Dear seller,

I'm sorry you underestimated the cost of shipping but according to ebay's rules, you're obligated to honor the shipping price as stated in the listing. You cannot charge me more.

Maybe you aren't aware but if you print shipping labels through ebay, a tracking number is assigned at no additional charge.

I've paid the price as required so I'm hopeful you will send my purchase.

Thanks.

Buyer"

Good luck.

Re: Weird eBay Seller

Once I opened an INR case, he shipped it out. Got it today.  I'm not sure what service he used to mail it, but he shipped it in a simple clasp manila envelope.  The postage price on the label?  $2.16.  No idea at all what all the drama was about that it would cost all this money to mail it - honestly when you sell something, ship it out, or don't even list it as an auction if you don;t like that it only sold for 99c.

Hi @unemployed_husky

It sounds like the seller took the risk of shipping it without tracking ... which they had not wanted to do at first.

It couldn't have been shipped First Class Mail Package for $2.16 ... but could be shipped as a First Class Mail Envelope w/o tracking for that amount.

Glad you eventually got what you paid for!

Re: Weird eBay Seller

Ah OK, well I have no idea why they didn't just say that to begin with. I mean it's a 99c auction, it wouldn't have been a big loss if it never showed.  Didn't know there was a difference between package and envelope though, I have seen both envelope types shipped just saying 1st class package on the label.

Re: Weird eBay Seller

Ah.

He listed it at auction with an opening bid of 99c expecting it to go higher which would cover the additional postage shipping would cost.

And then got only one bid, selling at the opening of 99c.

Too bad.

He took a gamble and lost.

Big boys see their mistakes and learn from them.

I guess he's not as grown up as he thinks.

His lessons should be  to make his opening bid the lowest amount he would be comfortable to receive and to use Calculated Shipping so that he does not underestimate the real cost of shipping.

If he will not ship for the advertised fee, you can open an Item Not Received dispute and get a refund. Then leave appropriate feedback. The most effective feedback is calm, polite and factual.

Re: Weird eBay Seller

I was wondering if you eventually received you item.

Glad to know that you did.

Don't forget to go back and close the INR case. It sounds like he didn't use tracking (from the postage cost) and if that's the case, he has no way to document that it shipped. Other than your closing out the case, of course.
