Trying to cancel a sale I didn't pay for but because I had to wait for the seller, time is up.

I won a lot containing 9 thin books. The 9-book listing showed calculated shipping as $7. I recently got 4 of the same kind of books shipped to me from a different seller for $12 shipping, so didn't think anything was wrong with $7 shipping.

After I won the auction, the seller told me not to pay until they sent me the correct charge for shipping with UPS. It took a couple of days to receive the updated shipping fee, which ended up being $25. If the listing had said $25 shipping, I wouldn't have bid on it.

The seller understood and told me to cancel the purchase. I tried to but received an error message saying it was too late to cancel. It says I should work things out with the seller. I offered to pay $12 for shipping but no more. We can't come to an agreement and it wasn't my fault that it took too long for me to cancel. How can I resolve this?

Once X number of hours have passed since the buyer won/purchased, the buyer cannot initiate the cancellation.  At that point, the cancellation has to be initiated from the seller side.

The seller should be able to initiate from their end and select "buyer requested".

@rosemakh  Sadly, the Seller is not being honest with you regarding what you saw for shipping on the listing and what they are invoicing you for.  Message them and ask them to Cancel the entire transaction based on the Listing at the time of purchase showing $ 7.00 shipping and them invoice for over 3 times that amount, $ 25.  Then wait.

You can also use the Report item link on the listing ...

Re: Trying to cancel a sale I didn't pay for but because I had to wait for the seller, time is up.

You could just pay for the pre-agreed price of $7 which seems a fair cost for media mail. I cant estimate what UPS charges off hand. The seller can choose to cancel and refund if this isnt acceptable, breaking policy.

If it was 9 books for a $1 shipping I would not take advantage of the seller's mistake but your exchange doesnt seem like the seller is justified in telling you not to pay $7. Fairness goes both ways and the policy is on your side if handled correctly. It is of course your choice how to handle it but you have a policy to follow too when it comes to completing the transaction as agreed by making payment in a timely manner.

Re: Trying to cancel a sale I didn't pay for but because I had to wait for the seller, time is up.

Tell the seller that you want to cancel the transaction; but that it's too late for you, as the buyer, to make a formal request.  Your message alone is justification for him to cancel the transaction on the basis of "Buyer requested."

But if this every happens again, just pay the original invoice without waiting.  It's a violation of eBay policy for a seller to charge more for shipping than the amount shown in the listing.  If the seller makes an error in the shipping cost, they are supposed to absorb that cost rather than passing it on to the buyer. And $7 is enough to send a 5-pound package via Media Mail to any US ZIP Code; $25 would be enough postage for over 30 pounds.

In other words, your seller has made several mistakes: (1) in setting up the shipping cost in the listing; (2) in expecting you to pay for the extra postage.; and (3)  in expecting that you the buyer can cancel the transaction.

So the $7 shipping charge will not go through if you paid when you won the auction? I would have paid it as such not waiting for an update on shipping. I am assuming you couldn't paid for it until he sent an updated charge. I would only bid on auctions that give me a shipping cost when I win the auction.

Once a new invoice has been sent the buyer can't pay the original invoice price

Are you able to go back to the original order confirmation and pay from that page that shows $7 shipping. If so, I'd do that and cease communication with the seller.

What they did was wrong and not allowed.

And on that note, how did that seller even get the invoice changed? I thought the system only allows changes to shipping when it's combined different items.

Also, to the OP, you should understand what can be shipped media mail, and ask anyone you are buying from to use that. Shipping books via UPS is just stupid, IMO.

No, the seller can send an invoice with revised shipping cost even if the purchase is just one item.
