I bought an item that was not as described for an item that arrived damaged. When I went to open a case it said the item listing has been removed and the sellers page has "no longer a registered member" in red next to it.
I opened a case anyway, and the seller has been replying the whole time. A little confused since I've never encountered this before, will this proceed like a normal case? How is the seller still actively replying but not registered at the same time? And is there anything I should be careful of if I do end up sending the item back to a seller that isn't registered anymore?
Thanks!

A suspended seller can continue to communicate with a buyer if there was a transaction in progress.
You should have received an email from eBay when the seller/item listing was removed. Check your trash and spam folders, along with your eBay messages here on the website. That email should include instructions on how to proceed.
What kind of communication have you been having with that seller? What is that seller telling you? (Don't reproduce or copy/paste any messages here in this thread. Just explain the gist of it in your own words.) Keep in mind the seller has been suspended, so maybe you should question what s/he tells you . . .
I would discuss your specific situation with customer service before I sent anything back to anybody.

Hi "no longer a registered member" does not necessarily indicate that the seller was suspended. It could also mean that he or she is no longer interested in listing his / her merchandise on eBay. If he / she is still communicating with you that tells you this seller is dedicated to good customer service. Best of luck with your open case

Came back to add: When a seller decides to close his / her eBay account for whatever reason, he / she cannot do so as long as there are open cases or items still not delivered. So, during that period, it is normal that the seller can correspond with you. Best of luck

You stated in your original post that the item listing has been removed and the seller is "no longer a registered user."
This seller has been suspended by eBay and his/her item listings have been removed. This is not a seller who voluntarily closed his/her account. If the seller has requested that their account be closed, you will not see "no longer a registered user" until that account is fully and finally closed. eBay will not close a seller's account for 60 days after receiving the request if there have been sales as long as 30 days prior to the request.
Please make sure the seller is not trying to stall the return process by trying to trick you into missing out on a return deadline, for example, rather than providing good customer service. Unfortunately, a problem seller may try to coax you into accepting a replacement that never arrives, or some other rouse that somehow ends up nullifying your Money Back Guarantee.

Along with what the previous respondents have written, a seller could be suspended and have their items removed for not paying their ebay fees. ebay would allow them to respond to a dispute that was open before their account was suspended. However, as pburn mentioned, the messages could be an attempt to stall you past the time frame for asking ebay to step in and get a refund.
You can copy and paste or take a screen shot of messages between you and the seller omitting the seller's username and item number. Then we might be able to let you know if we feel the seller is trying to scam you or not.
