Purchase partly refunded by seller, ebay hasn't refunded my sales tax

Hello,

I bought a monitor the cost was $2600 + Tax $230.75.

The monitor had a scratch on the screen so the seller agreed on a refund of $500.

The refund was received 02.21.20, Ebay hasn't refunded the difference of the sales tax.

Does anybody have insights of how to proceed?

I assume you've double-checked your PayPal account and your funding source (credit card, bank account, whatever) to confirm that you haven't been issued a refund . . . the couple of refunds I've received--including a partial refund--have had the sales tax refunded by eBay.

Your best bet at this point is to contact customer service either by phone (see the "Help & Contact" link on every eBay web page), or through Facebook or Twitter:

The eBay employees who make up the community team really really don't investigate individual members' concerns or complaints posted on the discussion boards. While they are always very gracious in responding to posts, their recommendation for members' specific issues is to contact customer service. 

They are great resources for us in answering general eBay policy questions or clarifying eBay policy or taking up concerns about broader technical Issues; however, they are pretty clear that problems with an individual's account--like the OP's issue of how to get sales tax refunded--is a matter for customer service, not the eBay community team (aka "the blues).

I have understood that they have provided training & coaching to customer service staff when it relates to implementation of eBay policies & clarification & explanation of policies of which staff is unaware or misinformed, etc

This issue of failure to refund tax, misinformation by cs, etc, has been raised several times on the boards

Should an automatic sales tax refund  be fortcoming from ebay when a seller issues buyer a partial refund which is documented & has been recorded on the eBay platform ?

If you'll look again @johnny_fontain you'll notice that you got a $459 refund, instead of a $500 refund.

That's because eBay refunded the $40+ difference as sales tax.

The OP didn't say anything about having any contact with customer service representatives, so there isn't any "training and coaching" for anyone to do in this case.

I double checked my paypal account, beside the $500 nothing was refunded.

In a refund for the full amount of a transaction, you would receive a refund of the item cost & shipping, followed by a separate refund from eBay of the sales tax that was applied & collected.

Contact your seller to gather a little information.

Did your seller refund you through PayPal from your original payment or did they do a separate transaction to send you money?  That matters.

If the seller had of refunded you from your original PP payment, your sales tax would have automatically been calculated and refunded to you at Ebay's expense.  It would have been part of the refund you received to whatever funding source you used when you paid originally.

Since that didn't happen it sounds like your seller incorrectly processed the refund.  

So contact your seller and see what they say. 

To fix this could require a little work on your part and that of the seller.  But first you need to know exactly how they processed that refund.

I checked again. On paypal it says "refund $500 (tax and shipping included)" I asked the seller if he send $459 or $500. Something is very off if the seller send $500 and Ebay states it is $500 including tax.

Are you just waiting in the hopes something changes???  If that is your approach, it is not very likely you will resolve this issue.  The more time that passes the less likely you will get a proper resolution.

Have you contacted your seller as I previously suggested on this thread?  You need to know how they issued the refund.  That is the only way you will know what happened.    But of course your decision.

I haven't I heard back from the seller, but since paypal wrote that this is a refund I assume it is part of the whole transaction and not something separate.

I just wait for confirmation of how much he send. We agreed on $500 and $500 arrived, only paypal adds the (tax and shipping included) thing. Which I find very strange, since the tax on this auction is collected by Ebay not by the seller.
