Three months ago I sold a watch - buyer made an offer on listing, wasn't insulting so I accepted. Transaction went smoothly; fast payment from a long time established account. Item boxed and shipped next biz day, tracking and delivery went without a hitch. Two days after delivery received the buyer leaves me positive, glowing feedback for fast shipping, watch in great condition and just like one he had 20+ years ago.
Fast forward exactly 30 days and I get a message from Ebay saying customer is disputing payment, told his institution he couldn't recall purchase. Ebay says I'm protected I don't need to do anything and will be resolved in 2-8 weeks. FF to today nearly full 8 weeks since dispute filed and I get message from Ebay saying buyer's institution sided with him but I'm still protected and money isn't coming out of my end. During this whole process Ebay never asked me to provide any info to help prove buyer bought and received item.
I also noticed my feedback rating was decreased by one - was trying to figure that out until I saw message of resolved dispute. Scrolled through and the feedback that this person left has been scrubbed.
What I was curious about is does Ebay even contest anything from the banking institution and was it Ebay that scrubbed the feedback? Case seemed pretty cut and dry to me that buyer made purchase and received item but scammed his bank and eBay to get a refund. Never once did buyer ever contact me saying they had a problem or just wanted to return so being the eternal skeptic I always assume someone is trying to get over on someone else. This was my first payment dispute, so is this a normal resolution?

I had my first payment dispute (in 25 years of selling) about six weeks ago. Mine was resolved in just a few days... got the same sort of notice from eBay that you did (I was protected) and I've heard nothing since.
Mine (and likely yours) was a case of fraud -- the "buyer" used a freight forwarder in New York to ship heaven knows where, but they used a credit card number that belonged to an individual who lived in Europe. The latter disputed the unrecognized charge with his bank (rightfully so -- he did not make the purchase) and eBay resolved the case with no burden on me.
Like you, I never heard from either of the individuals involved in the transaction. I never did receive feedback, so none was erased.
From what I understand, this is standard operating procedure and the typical outcome of a fraud investigation. Others may know more. regards

I won my last dispute but had to fight it.
This buyer had disputes with all his sellers on eBay for almost a year.
It might depend on the buyer as to how many disputes were being done on platforms and those with eBay.
The bank is usually the one who makes a decision
2-8 weeks seems rather long....mine took 8 business days.

If ebay already has the info needed to challenge the dispute they handle it themselves.
The only applicable evidence for that type of dispute is tracking showing delivery to the address on the order and signature if over $750. The bank may have decided in favor of their buyer if it was shipped to an address other than what's registered to the cardholder but you did everything right in ebay's eyes so they covered your losses.
Ebay does automatically remove the feedback as part of their seller protection.
