Here is a new one , i thought i seen it all, waited up for a really late/early morning auction ending, it was past 4 am , reset page to refresh countdown clock, clicked the bid button , got the biding pop up window , entered my amount ,more than 2 x's the current bid !, waited till 10 seconds left and clicked bid, instead of accepting the bid the bidding pop up window returned reset ,refreshed blank ! no message or notice it brought back the bidding pop up window instead of accepting my bid ! **bleep** ! ,so no time to re enter my bid i click the highest suggested bid in box , auction was close to ending , then page says auction ended, funny no other last minute bids recorded either ! Only one bidding at the end ?It looks like Ebay was glitching and system was rejecting bids at the time. Was it under maintenance and bids were not going through at that moment ? That is my guess , both me and the seller were denied ! Anyone else experience this ? Whats the point in complaining to Ebay . Chalk it up to another bad user experience due to system issues ! I know the system saw my entry , but again instead of registering my bid the system returned the biding pop up like i clicked on the bid button , but hey it was the pop up window , you can't press the bid button in that situation !

Funny isn't it now my bid pop up is working ! Funny also when you lose auctions during the day time to last minute bidders that get a bid in on the last second , but in early morning after hours ebays system won't react correctly to a bid placed within 10 seconds of the auction ending ? I contacted seller , told them about it, they told me 9 watchers at end no one else bid? wasn't too pleased , probably experienced the same thing ? Winner already paid , seller told me he has no choice but ship it , label already printed ! So this is like the 5th time i had issues with my bid not registering, but returning to the pop up to place a bid instead of accepting a bid was different !

I have never heard about this happening before. eBay used to do their site maintenance in the early hours of Thursdays and it was announced on pages. Now it seems they do it when ever necessary, which is probably often considering how many glitches they've had in the last year.
"reset page to refresh countdown clock, clicked the bid button , got the biding pop up window , entered my amount ,more than 2 x's the current bid. waited till 10 seconds left and clicked bid, instead of accepting the bid the bidding pop up window returned reset ,refreshed blank".
If the page took awhile to reload, when you refreshed, it is probable that the countdown clock was off when it finished loading. It was showing the time left when the info was sent, not the actual remaining time. I have watched my auctions end on my selling ID, from this ID, and have seen the clock fluttering back and forth several seconds at a time. This is the only explanation I can come up with, for what happened.
These days I do not wait up for auctions to end. I place an automatic bid before I go to bed. When I wake up if I have won fine, if I lost also fine. If I really want the item I may use a sniping service. When planning on manually sniping I refresh the listing page at 10 to 5 minutes out, and usually earlier than that. I have noticed when watching the seconds tick down after, that some times the countdown clock speeds up a few seconds at at time in the first few minutes after the refresh. I have taken that to be the connection or lag time between server sent info and page display catching up.

Were you bidding from the item page, or the bid history page? I have seen one or two other posts by folks having issues going through the link on the bid history page.
I would suggest bidding directly from the item page, and leaving yourself a bit of extra time just in case your bid does not go through the first time. Possibly open the item page in two or more tabs, with amounts prefilled-in and submitted, so that you are looking at the "confirm" button and there are no fields to fill in.
Once or twice I have had issues where I had to sign in again to actually place a bid, so leaving sufficient time to account for such things is useful. There may be instances of very slow refreshes, or random network hiccups, so if it is a one of a kind item give yourself a little extra leeway to get that bid in.
It's frustrating to miss an item because you were unable to bid, but you have no way of knowing how many times you won because someone else ran into the same sort of problem.

Clock was not off either before or after refreshing, did that with 5 minutes to go ! Time did not run out , if it did the 2nd pop up window to place a bid would not have reloaded, in fact it does reload either saying you have been outbid or saying you are the high bidder, and even as i stated i clicked on the a pre suggested bid box suggestions after my bid crapped on me with a few 2,3 seconds remaining ! Bids usually get through at with only 2 seconds left too, i bid usually with 5 to 4 seconds left and i see bids go through at the last second that will beat mine. That Bid was not accepted either.I am sure it was due to the time of day, 4 am in the morning , something was going on in the ebay system , no other bids were placed in the final count down either, the seller said their were 9 people watching also, my guess they had the same experience as me , any of them waiting to put that last minute winning bid in.The item ended well below half the amount with item selles for any day of the week. Which really upset me, it looked like i was going to get a bargain great deal if i was the only person staying up , it was 1am on the west coast time, so not really that late considering, I expected to get out bid anyway , with my bid more than 2x's the current bid. My take away from it is never list items that end too late on ebay. early morning or evening is best. I do the same thing place a bid early but if its a rare item and the bids low and it is ending late, well here on the east coast , better chance of getting a bargain. Also i was up watching the Australian open anyway too !

I found the best way to bid is don't fill in the bid box at the item page, a pop up will ask you to confirm and place your bid, that box does not up date if a new bid exceeds yours you are going to place, What i do is at the item page i press the bid button, it pops up a box with the count down timer , with buttons with higher bids you can chose and a box for you to enter your highest bid instead, usful if your outbid you can instantly click enter a higher bid before the clock runs out if it returns you have been out bid, higher bid suggestion boxes appear ,That box counts down and refreshes the suggested bid choices live as bids are entered, your bid goes right through from there without a second box asking you to confirm.
So i had a hunch , maybe i made a mistake with my bid, i always add like 55 cents to my high bid, can't tell you how many times i won by the spare change i added, people usually bid in round numbers. So i wondered maybe i used an comma instead of a dot for the 55 cents , i tested that just now , bidding 1,75 instead of 1.75 on a new item with the 99cent starting bid i'm watching, it returned you have been outbid showing 2 dollars as the high bid , so the system reads comma or period mark for separating dollars and cents. If i was a paranoid person i would think that my desktop was hacked and someone messed with me as i was waiting to place a bid, You know just to send me a hint But yea we don't live in a world where things like that happen now do we ? If it was not an Ebay blip only other explanation is someone was monitoring my desktop and internet browsing and had some fun with me !
Eeeek !

Why don't you just use a good biding service . there are several good free ones out there. Been using one for years now and never encounter any problems.

Same thing happened to me, but it was 6:00 PM when it happened. I bid with about 30 seconds left, I waited until the last 10 seconds then confirmed bid and lost. The item sold for $76 and I had bid $119. All I got was a reset window with a similar item due to the fact that the auction was over and the item had sold for $76.

[...] That box counts down and refreshes the suggested bid choices live as bids are entered, your bid goes right through from there without a second box asking you to confirm. [...]
Be careful with those "no confirmation" suggested bid buttons. If new bids come in as you are hitting the button, you could wind up paying much more than you intend!
I prefer to decide how much I want to pay long before the end of the auction -- then, as you say, add a few extra cents to break a tie -- and enter that amount and confirm the bid with about ten seconds left. If someone outbids me, they can have it with my blessings.
I must admit, I have placed a second bid in some cases where I noticed that I was outbid by less than one increment, because I knew for certain exactly what the current maximum bid was in that case. But I try not to be swept up in the bidding; it's better to make a dispassionate calculation long before that point, and stick with it.
[...] If i was a paranoid person i would think that my desktop was hacked and someone messed with me as i was waiting to place a bid [...]
If someone really wanted to mess with you, and they had that kind of access to your computer, surely there are far, far more effective things they could do than spoiling your eBay bids.

It happened again and i am **bleep** off at this point.I clicked the bid window bid button! It comes back that i have been outbid ? I entered 45+ dollars on an auction that was going at 15.50 ! **bleep** ,this is some software bug and it needs to be fixed ! The bid window was correct , i was just outbid 5 mins before entering my last try bid , the window did show the new high bid and was counting down normally . i placed my last bid with enough time for ebays software to return you have been outbid that i need to enter a higher bid amount ! It ended with the last bid that exceeded mine at 15.50 after i just did everything correct to win , my bid was 45.55 and it was not accepted , ebay software reset the bid window rather than accepting the bid ! i hope some payed employee at ebays software division looks into this matter and CORRECTS IT ASAP ! This is the auction so the bid history can be examined ?

correction to my last replay editing time has run out ?couldn't correct it ,lol What a joke ! my last bid before this happened was 19 and the going bid was 19.50 not 15.50 as i wrote. my last try bid exceeded that amount my last try bid was 45.55! I wonder what is going on , is there a count down timer that is screwing the process up? i left the bid window open for maybe 15 mins before using it to enter my last bid ! I will try opening the bid window only 5 or less minutes before entering a new bid on future auctions see if it happens again, i have left the bid window open for 20 plus minutes before and used it successfully ? Was this a maintenance issue and my bid window i left open spoiled by hard luck , bad timing beyond my control ? After all these years this system should be perfected and bug less ! using Ebay for years , this only happens now after ebays been around for many years ! Not improved , this appears to be not so rare anymore and every time i attempt to enter a last bid i will have to re experience fear of this reoccurring forever , never knowing when and what auction will be lost again for no good reason. i have lost faith in expecting normal functioning of ebays system accepting bids. This was something i really needed at this time and had use for and would have gotten a great bargain ! The reason i use Ebay ! Bad experience ! Bad Bad very Bad , venting here doesn't help much ! Fix this , find the cause , that is what your jobs are , please forward this event for investigation and find the cause and correct it !

If you tried to bid $19.50 after the other bidder had already raised the bid to $19.50, your bid would not be accepted as it would not be high enough. To be a valid bid, it would have to be at least one increment above the current bid price. Since the increment at that level is $0.50, you would have had to bid at least $20.00 to be accepted as valid. Bids lower than that would be rejected by eBay.
For best results, you should decide beforehand how much you are willing to spend including any tax and shipping charges, and the bid the appropriate amount (plus a few cents to avoid bidding a round number at break a potential tie) once, as late as you are comfortable with. It is generally not necessary to wait until the last few seconds to bid, just bid as late as you are comfortable with.
You should assume that other bidders will bid at the end of the auction as well. Trying to beat another bidder by bidding one increment at a time is not effective, since you do not know the maximum the other bidder has already bid (or is willing to bid at the end).
If you bid the maximum you are willing to spend -- and you get the bid in early enough -- the only way you can be beaten is if another bidder is willing to spend more.

Just a guess here.
1. Your internet service is doing maintenance at 4am in the morning. (Mine is set for 3am)
2. Your internet security is running scheduled (or unscheduled) check.
3. You need to reset your modem.
4. You have an issue with a line or hardware. (I have to switch out modems almost every year now)
In the past comcast was out a couple times a year. They replaced connections at telephone pole. They replaced connections outside the house. They replaced connections inside the house. Went through a couple of very frustrating years.
In my town, I have noticed things slow down at night and I just assumed everyone is sucking up limited bandwidth.
Let me know if any of these help.
