I don't have a problem, I'm not seeking help/advice ... I'm simply raising this as it's something I've just experienced.
I have a local pick-up order @ a local coin shop I've dealt with before. I know them, I trust them, and in any case I know my buyer's rights and how to navigate any potentially problematic situations that may arise at any time...
They marked my pick-up order as "picked up" today but I didn't pick it up yet. I messaged them out of curiosity (not concern) why they did that and they said to avoid a metrics ding (like how we all have to mark shipped w/in our handing time). Unless someone knows something I don't, a local pick up should have no effect on a timeline metric ding like that?... i'm guessing they did it to be safe but weren't at any risk and probably don't need to & shouldnt have done what they did. (Again, I'm not worried personally, that's not the issue or my question)
My real question is, WHY CAN A SELLER UNILATERALLY MARK AN ORDER AS "PICKED UP"?
Although this time it was formally marked a local pickup, I've done local pickups from them before but it never was a formal local pick up where we actually marked it as such (they always marked shipped but never did ship it and i just went in and got it myself). I've never gone through the FORMAL local pick up process as prescribed by EBay, so I have no first hand experience ... however I thought a pick up required the buyer to provide a code (QR or numeric or something) to the seller? Is that not the case? I feel like it should be the case if it isn't... it should be something that requires BOTH parties to be involved, why should a seller be able to unilaterally mark picked up? That's like me being able to ship something and mark that it has been delivered. That's nuts. As a seller myself, I'm 100% uncomfortable that I would even have that ability if I offered local pick up to buyers (I don't use it, but if I did...).
Of course buyers have protections. Pretty much everything and every seller fraud can be overcome. Seller's ability to mark "picked up" seems like a HUGE flaw in the system though...
Am I missing something here? Any thoughts or insights into this? Or does this ability of a seller seem sketchy to you like how it seems to me?

Is this possibly a NEW option that eBay has just given sellers the ability to choose?
eBay adds, removes and changes so many things without formal announcements.

No clue, if it is, it should be promptly reversed. The formal Local pick up process all-in-all is totally new to me.
I feel like this function is just "tee-ing" up fraud that will make buyers jump through hoops to navigate their way out of. 🙄 How many buyers already have enough trouble as it is and don't know their MBG rights, I feel like this just begs for more problems.

I wonder if ebay started bugging them for tracking numbers for items that were marked as "shipped" and since they didn't actually ship, they got restricted for "shipping without proof of tracking."
Although you've done business with this seller and trust him, you both should be abiding by local pickup protocol and using QR codes. Neither of you knows whether the other might cross over to the dark side.
JMHO.

Ebay bugging them could make sense as to why they no longer just mark shipped and formally do local pickup. They don't actually offer pick up in the listing, they used to invoice me free s/h and have me just come in, this time they included pick up in the invoice they sent me.
I can't do much about it other than take a stand or complain about it to them. I would prefer the QR code method, but I also don't know if they even know/knew how to or not and didn't feel like micro-managing their selling practices. I mean, it's frustrating as a buyer/seller, interacting with a seller who doesn't know processes. Too many times I've had to (as a buyer) walk the seller through how to do things in order for me to complete my purchase/transaction. I try to just let them take the lead and handle their end of things unless I really need to step in and fix something.... In any case, I don't see any real risk exposure on my end here in this case ... MBG + CCC disputes/charge backs... mark the order however you want to to satisfy EBay's system and your metrics/#s as a seller, I don't care how you do it or don't do it ... I'll surely be getting my items or my $$ back.

If local pickup wasn't offered in the listing how is eBay supposed to know a QR code is needed? Crystal ball??

Not sure if this was genuine/rhetorical/sarcastic and not sure if it was directed to me or Alberta.
In any case .... As you note Local pick-up was never offered on the listing. Originally they just invoiced Free S/H and had me pick up, so QR code was literally not possible as it wasn't "local pick up" in the system. This time it of course wasn't offered in listing originally but it was includedd after the fact via the invoicing function, so this last time YES QR code was available and I would have used it ...but they marked picked up so that became a moot point really fast...

How do I reverse that an item was picked up. I am the seller and never used this function before so I thought I had to enter the code from the buyer but now I know that is not the case. Naturally the buyer wants me to change the status back but I don't know how to, the only option seems to be to delete the order which is a pain for both of us. Help please.

You should have asked this question on the Selling board, since you are the seller. However, Since you have apparently entered a code or marked the item as shipped, it cannot be undone. Simply make arrangements to meet up with your buyer complete the sale and ask them to leave feedback ASAP. If for some reason your buyer isn't happy with the item, have them send you a message through ebay, asking for you to cancel the transaction you can then go to your seller hub Cancel the transaction using buyer requested cancellation as the reason, and issue the refund if he buyer already paid.
If you marked the item as shipped to meet your selling shipping time frame, that was a mistake. When you sell an item that has local pickup as a shipping option, you do not need to complete the sale within your shipping time frame.
Some of what I have written here may differ from the policies on ebay's Australia based site. You have posted your question on the U.S. based site (ebay.com) To make sure you get accurate information, login to the Australia based site (ebay.com.au) and ask your question on its community Selling board.
