Item not received

I purchased an item from new seller and it started off with bad communication from seller. Seller finally provided a tracking number through eBay and the status stayed saying usps still awaiting item. After finally reporting to eBay seller states item was shipped. A few days later the item showed on its was coming from a completely different state. Item was supposed to arrive today and it stated item was delivered. When I contacted and went by my local post office, they showed me the item attached to the traffic number proved on eBay for my item, wasn’t addressed to me and wasn’t for me. What do I di?

Re: Item not received

Sounds like they gave you the wrong tracking and/or didn't ship your item to you.  That's unfortunate.

File an item not received once you are past the scheduled delivery date.  Then the seller has 4 days to respond.  After that, ebay can step in and you get your money back if the seller doesn't take care of the problem directly.

Re: Item not received

Contact ebay for business on facebook. Whatever you do, do NOT open a claim for item not received. If you have to open a claim then open one for "item not as described."

Re: Item not received

I should have mentioned that if you open an "item not received" the seller can upload that tracking number and the case will close in their favor because the tracking shows something was delivered somewhere (even though it was not to you).

Re: Item not received

You can open an item not received case, but it'll be closed since tracking shows it was delivered.

You need to get a letter from USPS stating that the package was not addressed to you, then use the letter to appeal the INR case.

It wouldn't hurt to file mail fraud also, then use that report in your appeal.

Have a great day.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking of that.  Good point.

Re: Item not received

@greg_stepp,

You have been the victim of a fake tracking scam. The seller's send something, an envelope or small box with tracking to a different address, and uses the Delivered scan to win an Item Not Received (INR) dispute.  eBay's automated INR system is not allowed access to anything but the scan information, due to shipping company's privacy policies. eBay's reps cannot get specific label information from a shipper because they are neither the sender or recipient.

Do not file an item not as described dispute, the scammer could provide a label to a different return address, then reverse the tracking scam.

You will have to go to your P.O. or  a local UPS or FedEx store. You need to bring a copy of your order details page which shows your address and the tracking number with you. If you bought using a phone or tablet, you can bring that to show the clerk the order details. In the case of FedEx and UPS, if you can call them first and get them to send you an email saying the label's address does not match yours. bring a copy of that or your device with the email, with you to one of their stores. eBay will not accept an email as proof, because emails can be faked.

You want to ask the clerk to check the label address against yours on the order details page, and also to check the Package type/size/weight info to see if was is appropriate for what you should have received. .   If the info does not match up, you ask the clerk to write a note on Company stationary saying in general that the shipping label's address was not yours, and if applicable that the package type/size/weight was not right for what you should have received. Show them a copy of the email, which may get the clerk to agree to writing the note. explain that ebay doesn't accept emails. Do not ask them to write specific address or package info, they cannot give it out.  Have the clerk print their name then sign and date the note.

Once you have the note, you can appeal the dispute ruling, if you have lost an appeal already, you contact ebay through their Facebook or Instagram social media pages. (links below) You can write out what happened in the message, and what you found out, and add a CLEAR photo or a scan of the note to an Appeal or message.  If you go the social media route which is recommended, but not always necessary, if you get the info before filing an appeal.   The social media reps know about the fake tracking scams and can authorize a refund, but you will need to have the seller's username and the ebay item number. At the end of your message give them your real and ebay username.  It can take a couple of days before you get a reply.

When buying from (0) sellers you probably do not know that ebay places a 21-30 hold on their first few payments, and many of them do not know that. The hold is also placed on sellers who have not sold anything in over a year, so in the future I strongly suggest that you check the feedback profile pages of each seller you intend to buy from, before bidding on or buying their items.  You can access a seller's feedback profile page from near the bottom of listing pages. Use the See All Feedback  button below where their name is in a large font.  On the profile page if the seller has received neutral or negative feedback, click on the numbers of them to read only those comments. Never go by a feedback percentage alone. Some people who have been scammed but did not file a dispute may have left feedback saying they never received their items.
