I made an offer on an item, it had offers enabled. Seller has sold tens of thousands of items so very experienced. Item price was $1474.99 I offered $1350 so 8% discount. I hadn't heard anything so I sent a message, said I hoped I didn't offend them and did they have a number in mind.. They promptly declined my offer and raised the price to $1850. I am a bit shocked.. Very sad, darn near tears because I can't afford that.
What the heck did I do wrong?
Thanks for any insight.

You didn't do anything wrong. Sounds like the seller didn't want to entertain offers and should have removed it from their listing, or maybe you alerted the seller to a pricing error they didn't realize they made.
Sorry it didn't work out for you.

Thank you..
I'm pretty sad.. I know I'm a baby..
I suppose the item will sit another 2 years.. It's been listed since Jan 2023.
I guess I should have just paid the full price of $1474.99 SIGH..

< near tears because I can't afford that >
Will you say what the item number is, so I can check out the listing?

You do realize the price of gold does fluctuate daily. On the 28th of February the half ounce of gold would have been close to their original asking price without the ounce of silver or the collectors value of the set.

I would never. The seller might have increased the price when he checked on what the price of gold has been doing. It has consistently been increasing. It has increased beyond my reach, too.
Is it especially the 1987 set you want? Is there something special about that year? Do you need it to complete a series or something?

@chevymontecarlo88 I do. I also realize it's 22k not .999 and they set the price, had offers enabled. I don't know what that has to do with it. I made an offer and they raised the price. And melt price on the day I made the offer was around $1200.
@gosimus Yes.. It's specifically the gold one. I already have the silver coin. I'll live without it but I've been watching it for a LONG time & saving for a bit. I finally had the $$ so I made the offer.
I don't need it obviously but it was just a very sad experience all around. If it had been listed without offers, I would've just paid the asking price. I couldn't figure out what I did wrong. I know some sellers are very touchy about offers.
Anyway, Thanks..

Some sellers will have a very very high promoted item for sale...with offers enabled.
The seller wishes for item to be notice plus be on other seller's pages...thus it needs a very high promoted %.
The seller doesn't really want to sell it but wants to attract buyers to look at their other items for sale.
Seller scared thinking you might buy it at $1474.99...so they raised it at $1850. knowing you wouldn't buy it.
Just a thought what might have happened.
There are some items promoted very high without any intention of the seller selling them...seller wants buyers to look at their other items for sale.

Wow that is very enlightening and would explain a lot actually.
Most gold coin sellers(especially that size) fluctuate their prices each day when the spot price posts. I believe this coin has been that price the entire time I've been watching which is like 8 months.
Thank you so much for that James.. It helps a little with my disappointment.
And yes, they were correct, I was prepared to buy it at the list price and I'm kicking myself for trying to make a deal.
Thank you very much.

Showing interest can trigger some sellers to raise prices.

Spot price $1200 (just for the gold coin the day offered)
Your offer for complete set shipped $1350 (with silver coin)
Fees to sell on eBay at 13.6% (-$183.60) Not including shipping.
I might have the category percentage wrong but the incentive to sell for that offer may just be too low for them. Especially when they could just melt it locally (for more) without the hassle of shipping/transaction. With the rise of gold this week, this listing probably was not updated with the new price.
I know the feeling of missing out on a deal. Sometimes they do get away.
-Good luck

"What the heck did I do wrong?"
You didn't do anything wrong, you took a chance on sending an offer and it backfired. It is the same risk any of us takes when sending offers.
The offer may have made the seller check the spot price, so they did, declined it and raised the price. If they haven't blocked you, you could try offering them the previous sale price, the worst thing that might happen is having that offer declined.
