Hard to find genuine item

Trying to find new "Ring Doorbell"    listing sort by price.

Guess what?   9 out of 10 listings are bootleg.

eBay allow those bootleg sellers to specify the "Brand" field as "Ring".  Those are bootleg version with no support.  And naturally you cannot even "report" the item as nowadays the report no longer takes text, only pre-constructed "issues" in drop down boxes.  And none of them applied to this blatant common case in eBay.

I want to buy Genuine "Ring" door bell.  But those who sell genuine ring door bells won't include "Genuine", so buyers will have to settle having to look for pages over pages over pages of fake Ring Doorbells that mix with some real ones.

Same frustration earlier this week trying to shop for Legos, eBay is LOADED with counterfeit ones with "Lego Compatible" and buyers have no way to filter them out.

After wasting 25 minutes, I give up, and will order from other websites.

Hard to find genuine item

Why not go to the source and be guaranteed it's real?

You also won't get any warranties, extras or support etc. if you buy from a non-authorized seller.

eBay does have a policy against trademark violations. Wonder if that might come into play?

@towandboat

If you are looking for a particular model of Ring doorbell, try searching for the actual model number instead of just ring doorbell, as both of those keywords are fairly generic words that could appear in many listing titles or item-specifics.

For lego searches, try excluding the word compatible like this:

lego -compatible

If you narrow the category to one of the LEGO-specific ones, you should see some filters on the left side of the page that will further limit non-lego results, such as a particular product line or individual set name.

eburtonlab's reply is spot on.  Doing a little research prior to searching on any site will help you find what you are looking for more quickly by giving you a Mfr's part number (MPN) you can add to the search.   It may also tell you if a specific item has been superseded, in which case there may not be a valid or full Mfr's warranty. Electronic items sold on the gray market, may not be covered by a Mfr's warranty at all, and Mfr's may not honor their warranty if an item is not sold by an authorized dealer.

Often dedicated sites give an MSRP which you can use to filter out the low priced counterfeit/copies one finds when using Price: +shipping lowest first.  On the first search results page you can enter a price filter Lowest [  ]  Highest [  ], and that can filter out most of the knockoffs.

  "After wasting 25 minutes, I give up, and will order from other websites".

What makes you think that other sites don't also have knock offs or non-genuine items listed either?  Using a MPN when searching should filter out most of the fake items, and if an MPN is given in a listing and you do not receive an item with the MPN on it, you can file a Not As Described dispute.

If I'm not mistaken, Ring is a relatively new technology product and as such has many proprietary components to the system.  Frankly, I'm not sure I'd look for it on any other site than that of the manufacturer or authorized dealer.

@towandboat,

I do not know why I didn't think of this yesterday, but what good is the word Genuine when shopping, if you know there are already people selling knock offs?  I collect items in a niche category and find listings using the words genuine or original in the title, but further down in the description it will say; "this is a scan / copy of a genuine or an original item...".

Several have told you shopping by Price: lowest, is the best way to end up with a knock off. Those products are new and popular therefore, legitimate sellers are not going to lower the price by much. However, they are ripe for being copied and sold at low prices.  If a listing does not have a Mfr's. part or item number (MPN),  and or a photo of a box showing the MPN chances are it is a knockoff.

Unless it's used, you won't find the first version for under 79.99, as that is the deal on A(and they own them). 129.00 is usually the regular price.
