HAS EBAY ADDING TAX TO ORDERS KEPT YOU FROM BUYING?

I have been an ebay buyer for years! In my state Ebay started collecting sales tax on purchases many months back and I am wondering how many of you buyers have stopped buying on EBAY and how many Sellers have been hurt by this? Also, can someone please explain to me why it is fair to tax items that are used? The tax has been paid already so shouldn't at least be taxed at a MUCH lower resale rate??? I used to buy almost daily on Ebay, and now I only even look on ebay to price check with the occasional buy. I bought something today but it was the first time in about 3 months... so I can say it has at least stopped me from buying daily down to maybe one purchase quarterly or so. Anyone else have an opinion or would you share if it has affected how much you buy now since you can get the same deal almost anywhere on many items now? Thanks!

Yup, the only beef i have with eBay and sales tax is they are charging the tax on shipping rates that are set by the sellers. And as a buyer you know how ridiculous the cost can be at times as the seller can charge any price they please. Yeah i know before you say it you don't have to buy from them... Shipping rates should be regulated in my humble opinion..

Yes...it HAS stopped me from buying on Ebay!!!  After today, when I need to buy something expensive, I will be buying from China or Mexico, or any other country outside the U.S.A...through Ebay.  I refuse to pay taxes to a corrupt government that bleeds me dry.  My ancestors and a cousin fought in the Revolutionary War in 1776 because of taxation without representation...so that they could found an independent country.  Now we have taxation without representation AGAIN!!!  No way...if the tax rates were reasonable...like 1% or 2%...then I wouldn't mind.  However, one place wants to charge 10.75% or more, sales tax on sales.  I will take my small amount of money and I will give it to China before I will give it to a corrupt government here.

Re: HAS EBAY ADDING TAX TO ORDERS KEPT YOU FROM BUYING?

PS:  I went to buy a cellphone last week for $210 from a seller in Miami, Florida (whom I had bought from in December, 2018 for $210 for a cellphone, without sales tax)...during this checkout, they were charging me $20? sales tax.  I cancelled the sale and went elsewhere.  I bought from another seller up north, in New York? and I made sure that they did NOT charge me sales tax.  They got my business, instead of the florida seller.  Next time that I need a cellphone, I will buy one from China, through Ebay, or go down to Mexico and buy one from down there and bring it back with me so that I will NOT have to pay these highway robbers and thieves any sales tax.

Anyway, just so that you know...I DO shop locally and spend my money locally to support the local economy, and I don't mind being taxed a little locally.  However, I object to being taxed to death by these thieves and highway robbers.  I only buy online if I cannot find it locally to buy.  I believe in supporting the local economy, but I DO object to being taxed to death.

@nightwolf001:

Sad news, Mercari will also be collecting sales tax, I received the announcement this week.

All online sale sites like eBay, Mercari, Amazon, etc., will be required to collect taxes, it is now the law and the smaller sites are all going to sales tax. New or used, handmade or found in the dump, it will all be taxed if taxable.

Sorry for the bad news:(

Re: HAS EBAY ADDING TAX TO ORDERS KEPT YOU FROM BUYING?

The sellers have NO control over sales tax being applied to their items. Some sellers have no idea you are even being taxed when you buy from them. eBay HAS to collect it for each State that requires it and send that money to that State.

Your sellers have ZERO to do with the tax being added, it's the individual States collecting the various taxes. eBay HAS to collect the taxes now and remit them to each State.

Don't blame your sellers or eBay, it's the individual States charging the taxes.

No changes, pretty much stopped buying this year. Sales down 75%. New eBay rules make it joyless to list & pray to sell.  Less income, less to use for buying.  But, still here. Listing & hoping for no invite to managed payments.

You know, like every other seller here!

I regret to inform you that the tax is based on the delivery address of the BUYER, not the seller. So it matters little where you purchase from, even items purchased from China or Mexico will be taxed if they are delivered to your state. eBay has no control over these taxes, they conforming to laws passed by individual states. All marketplace facilitators will have to comply.

Sales tax is determined by the total amount of the sale, in most cases.  If the state to which the item is being shipped deems shipping to be taxable, it is taxed.

Your opinion that shipping rates should be regulated is something that I can see causing quite a few problems.  Frankly, what we don't need, in my opinion, is more government regulation.  If you're talking about eBay regulating it, I would probably trust the government to do a better job of it and we all know what a mess the government can make of things.

Actually, buyers in states that have a sales/use tax levied by their states should have been paying the tax themselves to their states even if it was not collected by the seller.  What many state's have done, since the US Supreme Court ruled that it was constitutional for them to do so, is pass laws requiring marketplace facilitators such as the ones you mentioned to collect the tax for them.  It was probably the buyer's, from these states, not paying the taxes that they owed that strongly influenced the passing of these laws.

By the way, if the seller or marketplace facilitator does not collect these taxes because they fail to meet the state's volume criteria, the buyer is still responsible for paying the tax that they owe.

You do realize that you were required to pay the sales/use tax to your state on that purchase in 2018, right?  If the seller didn't collect it, you are still required to pay it to your state yourself.

As has been mentioned, the tax is based on the state that the item is shipped to and not the seller's location.  It is your state that has levied the tax.  Buying from sources that do not collect the tax does not mean that you do not owe it.

Alas!  I don't know many people that do not feel that they are being taxed "to death," as you put it.  Unfortunately, the only ways to legally avoid paying sales/use taxes levied by one's state is to move to a state that does not charge their residents such taxes.  There are, I believe, four or five in that category.   You could see if you can get an exemption for being a charitable organization or on merchandise that you hold for resale.  You'll have to check with your state's taxing authority, but I'd probably refrain from calling them thieves and highway robbers when doing so.Smiley Wink

Of course, since it is your state's legislature that levied these taxes, you might wish to try getting more active in politics and working to get these taxes repealed.  I'm not too sure of if you could prevail since most legislators know that the state needs funds to provide for the operation of government and maintain a viable infrastructure, but I wish you luck, if you choose this course of action.

Then I will just go down to mexico and buy what I want and then bring it back across the border.  If they want to be difficult, then I will just move to mexico or Guatemala...in a safe area in Guatemala.  I just object to being taxed to death on my small income...as I am retired.  I will gladly pay the tax to any other country but the USA...as long as it doesn't go to the USA...greedy highway robbers & thieves.

Same thing for jury duty...I filed for an exemption from jury duty...it was denied.  I just tossed the original notice for jury duty into a drawer somewhere and forgot about it.  They want me for jury duty...they can just send a cop to my door and arrest me.  If they force me to sit on a jury, I will only vote not guilty...no matter what.  I am not God and I will not sit in judgement of another human being.  Only God can do that.

Re: HAS EBAY ADDING TAX TO ORDERS KEPT YOU FROM BUYING?

Let me make this clear...I DO support the local economy as much as I possibly can.  I look for what I want locally...I really search hard for it.  Then, if I cannot find it locally, then I buy online.  I don't mind helping the LOCAL economy...I spend a lot of my income on the local economy.  I just HATE giving my money to greedy, money-hungry politicians and other greedy thieves and highway robbers.

If I HAVE to move to mexico to keep from giving these blood-sucking leeches my hard-earned money, then I will do so...or I will move to Guatemala...and I WILL do it.  My American Indian ancestors were here long before the white man got here.

Re: HAS EBAY ADDING TAX TO ORDERS KEPT YOU FROM BUYING?

Yes...I know that the Ebay sellers don't have any control over sales tax collections.  However, I have options.  I can move to another country if I have to, or who knows?  I have nothing against Ebay sellers...wonderful people.  But...I DO object to a 10.75% sales tax rate...1% or 2%, ok...no problem.  If I have to, I can go down to mexico, and buy what I want down there, and bring it back here across the border.  Let's see them do something about that.

I DO shop locally and I do everything that I can do to support the local economy.  I shop at Walmart and at local grocery stores and Walgreens, Family Dollar, Dollar General, Dollartree and any other store.  I spend all my money locally, unless I can't find what I need.  Then I buy online...only if I have to.

Actually, they can arrest you for failing to appear for jury duty.  As far as the other, if you find another country that you would prefer to live in, that is up to you.  If they are willing to have you that is up to them.  However, as long as you choose to live here, you should obey the laws of this country, in my opinion.

Of course, I'm not sure that your idea of hopping down to Mexico, buying and transporting your purchases back to this country would be very cost effective.  You would probably still be subject to your state's use tax anyway.  Of course, there may be other import duties you might incur in bringing goods into this country, but I'm sure that you have thought of that also.
