Ebay automatically paid my winning item without my permission?

this never has happened to me before and I didn’t not get any notice in email nor did I ever signed up or agreed to have automatic payment option on buying.

When I buy or bid and win an item, I always get an email from ebay saying I won or please pay for your item within 3 days so on….and I always click and pay within an hour for all of my purchases on ebay but this happened last night.

I bid on items…3 gemstones before I went to bed….I guess I won all 3 stones…

I wake up and check my emails and I got 3 email notice from ebay …

purchased….

So I went on my ebay account and saw, “we made automatic payment for your purchase ending ####

ebay made a payment for my winning…and I try everything and look for everywhere to stop this but none.

I do not want ebay to make automatic payment on my behalf without my permission.

again, there was no notice or email about this nor I click Yes on auto pay…none.

I am calling ebay after the holiday but to see anyone had this experience and if YES please is there to stop this?

thank you and you all have a wonderful Christmas 😊

Were these actually "bids" or were they "Best Offers".   eBay has been requiring  pre-authorization of payment to make a Best Office in some cases  for months now.   If you made a Best Offer and was required to give payment information to send it, you authorized eBay to use that payment information to pay the seller if s/he accepted.

On the other hand, why would you not want it paid right away?  It can be shipped to you faster.

Re: Ebay automatically paid my winning item without my permission?

Because ebay gives a minimum of 4 days to pay and many times I use that time frame to my advantage. For instance if I am out of town and don't want it shipped until I'll be back home, or  if I'm within a few days of my CC billing cycle to end.

@mybabylily,

To get back to your original question ...

No, I have not experienced this before. It has been reported with best offers. eBay is requiring some buyers to submit payment information when they submit an offer, and it is supposed  to be charged automatically if/when the seller accepts the offer.

With Buy It Now items, most items are IPR (Immediate Payment Required) in my experience, but you should have been aware of that when you made the purchase. So I doubt that's what happened with your experience.

That's the only time I have heard of this happening ... if that's not what happened with you, please confirm what kind of purchases these were. Did you place bids on auction items, or make offers?

Also what if you wanted to use a different payment method? It should be your choice, not ebays.

Then you use the Buy It Now button to buy it at the BIN price instead of making an offer.  If you want it a discount you've got to follow the different rules applicable to Best Offers.

With the best offer when you agree to payment to be authorized it's been showing my husband the chance to select which payment method to authorize when the offer is accepted

Re: Ebay automatically paid my winning item without my permission?

If you provide the item number maybe someone could take a look at the item and possibly explain what happened.

This is the policy and it states what has already been stated.

How immediate payment works

https://www.ebay.com/help/creating-managing-listings/listings/immediate-payment-works/selling?id=415...

This is a Auction from your recent seller that also has Make Offer.  In this case if a Make Offer was submitted instead of a Bid this may require a automatic payment if the listing was set up this way.

I tested it by starting a offer and I do not see that immediate payment will be required.  It allows for 4 days for payment.

If you did not do a Best Offer then I would be concerned that my account may have been compromised and change the password and contact my payment source.

Re: Ebay automatically paid my winning item without my permission?

Yes it was best Offer option and seller accepted all 3 items.

but there are nothing say it was immediate payment nor automatic payment needed nor I agreed to do so.

my payment option is always PayPal but ebay do not allow it.

plus, I bought an item from this very same seller, 4 days a go with best offer and seller accepted and I got an invoice mail from ebay saying…congratulations seller accepted your offer and pay now to get your item so on…

so why now?

like I said, I made an offer a lot and accepted by seller most of the time and neve4 has happened and again…I made an offer from this very same seller just days earlier and I-made a payment not ebay.

I went in to my account and there are nothing there that I allow this nor is there option to take it off this auto pay thing.

PS: I never wait to pay for an item for few days.

I always pay immediately right after I win unless I send an offer or bid on an item late at night and I went to bed

Re: Ebay automatically paid my winning item without my permission?

A few more comments on the subject:  I also ran into this in just the last couple days with "Make An Offer."  Do hope it's only a test, because it pretty much puts combined shipping of multiple items right in the garbage.  I always look thru a sellers other items to save a bit on postage, but now that's null.  Yes, sellers can refund, but that's extra work for them and I wait days for the $ return.

Since eBay discontinued the eBay bucks program, I have been using Mr. Rebates to get that extra 1% on purchases and now that's gone too with this immediate payment requirement.  Don't recall off hand if I was offered the option to select the shipping class or not.  This looks like another opportunity for eBay to shoot themselves in the foot.  I know I won't be making as many purchases if this become permanent.

That's odd. Until recently, I was part of the test group of buyers that had to authorize prepayment in order to send an offer, and it was always very clear. I was not able to send the offer without entering payment information.

That may be because I do not allow eBay to store my payment information. I always use PayPal, and I don't allow automatic login to PayPal to make payment either. So I always have to login in order to make a payment ... that way, if someone gets their hands on my laptop, they can't use my eBay or PayPal accounts to purchase anything. Nor if they get into my eBay account.

I would suggest that you remove all stored payment methods from your eBay account, and make it so that you have to enter the payment information. That way, if you encounter this when you make an offer, you will be warned about the pre-authorization when you try to send the offer. Then you can make an informed decision if you want to sent the offer (and prepayment) or not.

Re: Ebay automatically paid my winning item without my permission?

I just went to eBay community because the exact same thing just happened to me when I purchased a pair of jeans by making an offer. In 18 years, I have never had eBay automatically charge my credit card for anything. I have a credit card stored, but like you said, you get an acceptance from the seller, a request to pay for your item and then I go in and do it. Were you able to find out why this occurred?  Very disconcerting and I don’t like it one bit. Thanks.

I do not keep any CC info in my profile for this reason.

The phrase " subject to change without notice" is a key phrase that is wise to heed... Terms change without warning at times, and as we agree to use these services, we voluntarily/ involuntarily submit to whatever the current terms are.

What payment method do you have on file, then? Do you make all your purchases as a guest? I thought eBay required buying accounts to have a payment source associated with their account.
