I've recently learned that so called private listings are getting more common on eBay. I can see absolutly no reason (exept unusual items like adult stuff) why a seller makes feedback details unavailable for me to review. Since I buy fairly expensive music stuff I want to know that the seller has positiv feedback from selling just that and not from prior listings of chewing gum for half a dollar.
So I want to exclude all sellers who hide feedback details/private listings when I search. But how do I do that?

In any listing, click on "See other items" at the bottom of the seller information box. Then on the page of results in the column on the left you'lll see a link to look at Completed or Sold listings. The Sold listings go back 90 days; unsold Completed go back just 30 days.

There is no way to exclude listings from your search results on the basis that the seller has set them up as Private.
You can tell whether a listing is set up as Private by checking the bid history, or by looking at the bottom of the "Shipping and payments " tab.
Even if a listing is Private, you can check the seller's "Sold" listings for the past 90 days to see whether the sold itms are similar to what you're looking at.

Where can I see "Sold" for a seller?
That would be perfectly fine for me being able to see that the seller have been selling similar items + and having positive feedback at the same time.

I see, thanks for the info. That really makes quite a difference to be able to see.

Checking out some users using private listings and their "Sold items" I notice some of them seem to have "sold" the same item over and over. Identical photos, often at an increasing price each auction. This can't be right? Is this something I should report to eBay and in that case how do I report it?

It's possible that either they had multiples, or the earlier buyers didn't pay. There's nothing to report.

You might be right but this in combination with private listings looks kind of fishy to me. I will not bid on items from sellers that do this. At least not expensive 2nd hand stuff that hardly can produce identical photos for each listing.
How commin is non paying winners? If a seller has a lot of that, is that really a plausible explanation?
Anyway, I definitely have e better understanding of how to view and assess private listings now.
