One of the more fascinating somewhat subsidiary figures in literature. The man had a magnificent erotic literature collection, second to none, which, I believe, now housed in the British Library -- I could be wrong about which library.

Okay more clues: The person he wooed was Florence Nightingale. (blast! that tells it right there.) He obtained a pension for Tennyson, was deeply involved in copyright, championed Ralph Waldo Emerson in England and was one of the first to recognize the genius of Swinburne. He seems to have been a genial all-round nice guy, almost universally admired. (almost)
