SATNROSE’S BOOK QUIZ

2. What is the most valuable printed book?

Answer in invisible ink: 2. Was The Gutenberg Bible; now it is the Caxton Canterbury Tales

Note: I think a complete Gutenberg would beat the Canterbury if offered up to auction. However, the Caxton Canterbury is currently the most expensive printed book ever to change hands. 13 million? I forget.....

753. What is the most valuable modern fiction manuscript and who was the author?

"2007: The Tales of Beedle The Bard

J K Rowling initially wrote and illustrated just seven handmade copies of The Tales of Beedle The Bard. The fictional book of children's fairytales, first mentioned in the final Harry Potter instalment, was bought to life by Rowling as a thank you gift to six people who helped her during the 17 years she worked on Harry Potter. The seventh copy was sold at auction in Sotheby's in 2007 for £1.95m, the highest selling price in history for a modern manuscript, and all proceeds were donated to Lumos, Rowling's charity for children in institutions."

754. The first American bookplates date from the 1580's.

The first bookplate printed in what is now the United States has been widely attributed to Stephen Daye in 1642, but questions about the type ornaments used for the border have led to the opinion that it was not printed in America, and that the earliest bookplate printed in Massachusetts was for Samuel Philips in 1652.

SATNROSE’S BOOK QUIZ

I covered this a long time ago on the board, but no harm in reiterating. To really add to the value of the first Pocket Book edition of the Good Earth, find a specimen with the accompanying questionnaire. The book was issued as an experiment with an attached questionaire. Degraff sent the book around, free, to various chosen lucky souls ... to test the water .... would you be so kind as to fill out the questionnaire and let us know what you think of this new publishing idea. Experiment successful ... full steam ahead!

Pocket Book Good Earth was later reissued as No. 11, which is not nearly as valuable.

Gwinnett is no-fair, because to my knowledge there are, what? 15 or less extant verified signatures and NONE are in a book. All are deeds, a letter or two, or other legal documents such as

the Declaration of Independence

SATNROSE’S BOOK QUIZ

No longer the case, Kath. There are at least three examples in their original dustwrappers, one of which is a never-bound example sold off by Macmillan. It's still the correct answer for, "how many examples of the First State of the London edition of H. G. Wells The Time Machine: An Invention are known to exist," as well as the answer to the question, "how many examples of the London Trade edition of H. G. Wells The Time Machine: An Invention are known to exist in the red-orange-printed glassine dustwrapper?"

Thanks Joe! Not only an updated answer to the question, but now two examples to take the place of the original. More for the Notebook.
Be forewarned that these were collected over 5 years ago and for nearly 2 years I did not have access to them so there might more that need updated with current information and there are some that are subjective in nature.
