Just had a seller cancel the order with reason as buyer cancelled the order. This was buy it now with PayPal and already paid. I did not cancel the order. Is this what appears to me to be a jerk move to avoid negative feedback or is this just regular business as usual now on Ebay?

Go to your own feedback page. At the bottom of the page, click leave feedback. Cancelled items usually show up there.

They are avoiding something worse than a Negative, they are avoiding a Defect. You should still be able to leave feedback.

I checked the sellers feedback and every negative is related to this exact problem. I would not leave a negative if they had just said they were out of stock or didn't have the item. Using the buyer cancelled is just dumb. I'm not even actually sure how they do it as I thought all buyer canceled options were on the buyer side not the seller.

No, because you can message a seller and ask him to cancel. The seller has 3 choices - buyer requested, problem with buyer's address, or I can't complete the transaction. They are avoiding the 'I can't complete' - that is what gives them a defect.
