I was top bidder on an item that would have ended in a day. I checked eBay this morning when I woke up to see the current status while I was checking current sales. The item was ended, which I didn't think you could do if there were bids. No communication from seller or auto generated message from eBay that it was cancelled.
As a seller I've never cancelled an item with an active bid, so I'm not sure of the rules on that. I'm also saddened because actions like this without communication from the seller through eBay reflect poorly on is as sellers.
As a buyer, I'm extremely disappointed that there was no communication. Had I known this occurred I would have bid on a similar item that is now sold.
End soapbox. My question is focused on what the rules are surrounding canceling items with active bids.

Yes, sellers can cancel bids and end listings early. When they do this they are charged a final value fee based on the high bid at the time they end the listing.
