Is it automatically done or mandatory for eBay to relist your unsold auction items up to 8 times?

Just getting started again after some months away from selling. Noticed on the new listing form the fine print below time selection for auction to run there is a note saying if item does not sell eBay will relist it for free up to eight times. 

Is that done automatically? Is it a mandatory thing or is there a way to opt out of it?

On the advanced listing form, you select whether you want to auto relist or not.

It sounds like you are using the Quick Listing Form.  To eliminate the 8 free relists on auctions, you need to switch to the advance/business tool.  That option is in the upper right corner when you go to list your next item.
