I was the highest bidder on an item I look to see if I was still winning and the item was gone

By "gone" do you mean sold to someone else or not for sale anymore?  By highest bidder what kind of money are we talking about?  Did the auction start at 99 cents and the item was actually way more valuable?  We see a lot of that ... Sellers not being advised by eBay on the proper way to price items for auctions ... the starting price needs to be such that a one bid sale yields profit for the Seller ... more bids from interested parties means more profit.
