First timer

Hello. I'm sure this has come up any number of times but perhaps someone can help talk me down off of this bad feeling I've got from my first ever sell. The guy just responded a bit too fast. I barely hit the "submit" button before he jumped all over the item. I was frankly a bit shocked.

I did a google search on his address and it's a UPS store all the way cross country. I'm east coast, he's LA.

OK, so somebody anybody tell me how this guy cannot get my item, say he never got it, and then not pay?

Or when is the transaction finished? When it's "delivered" by the USPS or when he says he's "received" the item? Because that's a hole big enough for a Mack truck to drive through. He can of course say he didn't receive the item, get the item and his money back. What is the trigger for me getting paid? His "receiving" or the USPS "delivering"?

The buyer must pay for the item before you ship it. You will receive notification from Ebay when the buyer has paid and Ebay will provide you with the buyer's shipping address. You then ship the item WITH TRACKING so you can provide proof of delivery in case of any dispute.

Re: First timer

Hi @rapda-62

You are a new Seller and therefore a potential target for scammers.  The Leather bomber Jacket is a nice first sale but your funds will be held for up to 21 days so as @lady_madonna mentioned ship with tracking, you can print your shipping label through eBay and get $ 100 built-in insurance via USPS and ADD more to cover the full $ 130.

If the Buyer makes any false claims come back here and post again for us to help where we can.

I will make this comment now though, you loose flexibility on returns by using that Nor returns accepted policy, you cannot FORCE a sale on Buyers and eBay has two return types that bypass that setting completely and force YOU to pay for a return shipping label.  They would be "Arrived damaged" or "Not as described - does not match pictures or description."

If you decline either of those returns the Buyer can have eBay step in and close the claim in the Buyers favor and refund them out of your account AND let the Buyer keep the item.  And the catch of course is Buyers can lie about a return reason and you have to deal with it.

I use 30 day Free Returns and take full advantage of Seller protections when necessary, which is not very often: Seller protections | eBay

Now, NOBODY wants to see you fail but you do need to know these things moving forward.

Re: First timer

Thanks for the responses. Some of it was a bit technical for me. Or a bit too "inside" I'll say. But I'd like this question answered to help ease my first time jitters. When is the transaction considered complete? When the item is "delivered" by the PO, or when the buyers says he has "received" the item? I'll assume the buyer would have to click some button somewhere saying that yes he has received the item? Or is it automatic when the PO delivers the package?

Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question. I realize it is.

Re: First timer

@rapda-62

That is not a "stupid" question. You are a new Ebay seller, and there is a LOT to learn/know. It can be overwhelming, we understand.

If you use the Ebay shipping label, the tracking is done automatically and Ebay will know when the item is delivered to the buyer. The buyer does not have to "click" anything.

Your funds from the sale will be released after delivery, OR it can be as long as 30 days since you are a new seller and if the item was expensive.

Good luck and feel free to ask questions on this board.

Re: First timer

Well ok and thanks again. The USPS tracking says it should be delivered today by 9PM so I guess we shall see soon enough. I'll make sure to post what transpired and how everything went.

Thanks.

@rapda-62

Not to scare you but only the delivery phase of a transaction is completed when tracking shows delivered to your customer as @lady_madonna  mentioned.  However, you still have to wait up to 6 months to make sure a return or claim is not initiated by the customer with PayPal or a charge back with their credit card (if they used that to pay).  The eBay time frame for a return is 30 days from delivery date.  The vast majority of transactions go through without a hitch, otherwise few people would bother Selling on the venue.

Re: First timer

Oh no that didn't scare me in the least. <sarcasm> I think what I've done can best be described as jumping into the deep end and then as I'm going under looking for the lifeguards. For the hardcore you're probably looking at my stupid $130 transaction as nothing. I get it.

Seeing some things now I didn't realize the funds from the sale are kept in some kind of an EBAY limbo for some amount of time. Just kind of sitting there not mine and not his.

Which is where the scam comes in as I'm reading and watching now kinda late. The scam, and what my intuition told me was a gaping hole, comes when the buyer runs to EBAY saying they never received the item. If you note thats the critical point I kept mentioning. So, the buyer can get the item, claim he never did get the item, and appeal to EBAY and those funds that are sort of in limbo can go either way. Back to the buyer, who if he's just scamming, just got the item and his money back. Not bad for those just looking to game the system and get something for nothing. And actually make a profit, because you'd have to be a sick puppy, which there are aplenty in the world, to just get off scamming for the hell of it, whether profitable or not.

In the meantime I guess my item is making it's way somewhere on the opposite coast to mine. I think 9pm here is 6pm there. 9pm there is 11pm here.

I will post the results as they come in.

So that you know, nobody here wants to see you fail with this or any other transaction.  We try to give the best advice based on experience and knowledge from other experienced Buyers and Sellers.

eBay makes it easy to get set up to sell but I think there is a lack of good advice as part of that process to alert new Sellers what to do to protect themselves as they learn the ropes.

We don't see new Sellers until they come here and post about issues they are having.

You stated: "So, the buyer can get the item, claim he never did get the item, and appeal to EBAY and those funds that are sort of in limbo can go either way."

The buyer cannot claim he never got the item if you can prove delivery via tracking information.

Re: First timer

If the buyer files a case for Item Not Received, all you need to do is upload the tracking number that shows DELIVERED, and ebay will find in your favor.

Re: First timer

Ok it's "delivered". Couple questions for the community. Does EBAY really hold my money for an entire month, even if there is no dispute?

And regarding any dispute. Now comes the time for the scam if it's coming. From the reading I've been doing now comes the time for him to claim he didn''t receive the item and it's a merry chase with me, him and EBAY. And the reading I've been doing sometimes EBAY blows the tracking aside in favor of the buyer.

So, here we go....

@rapda-62

Please confirm it shows Delivered in your eBay sold item tracking history NOT the USPS web site.  The USPS website has nothing to do with eBay knowing it is delivered, only their tracking history.

Re: First timer

Man o man. Ok I think I found what you're talking about with the ebay tracking history. It looks just like the USPS tracking but it says "delivered".

Also it says "Your funds are now available". What does that mean?

Re: First timer

OK, so far so good I guess. Ebay deposited $108 into my account. Not sure where the $22 went from the listed price of $130 but again....so far so good.

Now I got to figure out how to send another item that apparently I have to pay shipping charges for. Not sure why because I listed both items together but apparently didn't do it the same way both times.
