Need help, with identification, authentication...

I receive this from a family member. I would like to know where and how to get information. I have scoured the internet with no success. How can I tell if it's real? Who or where can I take it in Virginia? Any help or suggestions an opinions would be appreciated.

Looks like black Mexican pottery to me. Oaxacan. Then again it could be Peruvian or Guatamelan.

Google "mythology of the Mayans" Incans etc. Looks like a ritual piece. Hope its old!

Any family members travel?

Could also be a tourist piece from Mexico or a south American country.
