I think the high prices we're seeing is deja mermaid. There are two, maybe three collectors creating bidding wars. I was looking through all the crow ACEOs last night, and noticed that the high bidder on every piece was the SAME PERSON.
Just as with the mermaids, this person will eventually tire of crows and move on, so I wouldn't recommend that anyone stop doing what they love, and start cranking out crows in the hope of that elusive big sale. I agree with Julee Bug. There's a lot of good work out there, and I don't feel that I can compete, so don't want to embarrass myself by trying. I have noticed a lot of crow art that looks like it was done in an attempt to "cash in," and I just hate seeing that.
I painted a bunch of mermaids when that craze was going on, hoping for a big sale, and while I did get a few decent sales, I have regrets about jumping on the bandwagon in order to make a buck. Not that I don't need the money, but I don't want to put art out there that I'm not pleased with because of a trend that may be gone next week.
Those big mermaid buyers are now collecting cats and fairies, so here today, gone tomorrow.
