WIP: Altered Book Project #1

I approach my art mostly seriously, with an goal in mind and a standard that I strive for. Silly me! But that is how it is ... so there are times I do things for 'fun', and altered books as well as other arts and crafts are what do it for me! Years ago I taught various crafts which included 'memory books' which were altered books, but usually only few pages were altered so that it was more a display item. I've also done some scrapbooking/rubber stamp and many paper projects since then, too, as well as teaching. This past weekend I took the time to join in with an altered book project and thought I'd show you some of what I did there. It is a book that has been cut into a ♥ (heart) shape (when opened). I still have much to do on it. Hope you enjoy this... ~Jillian

This 'spread' is almost finished, and possibly is. I deliberately wanted it to be an 'odd' match. I'm not quite sure if it's finished, but know it is fairly close. The tag goes down into the pocket.

This one I hadn't done before, it was just one of those 'spur of the moment' things. Spurred on by some lovely punched out leaf shapes, and some rose tags. The heart will be made into a pocket, and I'm not too sure what I will do from there to finish it off yet.

This is a folded, opening heart. It will feature on a page, so is the bare start of another 'spread'.

This is also another newly started page. I printed out this victorian image on cardstock, and cut it to page shape. It is after the front page so will be almost an introductory page after the frontspiece. It will be glued down to create a hidden pocket - and a tag will be added to the pocket with only decorative threads and possibly beads or feathers showing. I am considering putting lace only on the facing page. Simple but beautiful?

This is inside the front cover. I painted the spread black. The dragonflies are metallic. The chequered paper is black and silver. The tag is black with a dragonfly cut-out. I think it's finished. But still thinking on it. I like the odd balance of this.

Great book Jillian. The one I'm working on has been in the works for two months. I try to keep my hourly wage above 25 cents an hour. I think my Altered books fall somewhere around 10 cents an hour. I'm sure you are faster than me. They are fun... Ron

Jill, I love it! But I have a really stupid question...did you start with a cast off book to work with? Sorry, this is new to me. Linda

I used to do similar to these some 15 years ago, teaching them, but using them more as displays. I used to use cast off books then. You have to be really careful as a lot of old books are musty, and if the pages are starting to brown, there is no stopping the deterioration. The dollar stores have new books for a dollar or two in very 'sound' condition, and this gives you a good basis to work on. Check the spines, and make sure all pages are in there secure, as you do need to REMOVE a lot of pages to stop the book from becoming over stuffed.
