USPS - Another problem.

USPS is about to announce deliveries will only be 5 days a week, cutting one day. This means there is potential further for us getting our stars dinged under 'shipping time'. :( http://www.auctiva.com/edu/entry.aspx?id=USPS-Warns-of-Delivery-Cutbacks -- ~Jillian artist, Jillian Crider ... google me!

Re: USPS - Another problem.

Speaking of postage... USPS is increasing rates again. Effective MAY 11, 2009 All first class envelopes and parcels will cost more for us to ship.

Re: USPS - Another problem.

Gawwwwwwd . . . I hope it's only one cent again. Otherwise, it might be time to re-think free shipping. You know, I wish they would just pick a rate and be done with it. They've been changing the rate so frequently that they still have leftover stamps for sale at the 41¢ and 39¢ denominations. -- Kathy

Re: USPS - Another problem.

Okay, I combed the USPS web site and found the new rate chart effective May 11. I hope it's okay to post the link. It's just a postage chart, so I think it should be allowed: http://www.usps.com/prices/pricechanges.htm?from=prices&page=NewMay09Prices The press release says: "Prices for mailing services will continue to adjust each May. Prices for most shipping services, including Express Mail and Priority Mail, were adjusted in January and will not change in May." SO . . . it looks like only first class mail is going up in May, not packages. It also looks like we can look forward to an increase every May from here on out. For those of you who also ship larger paintings, FedEx is becoming a much better option for large packages. I opened a FedEx account earlier in the year when I sold a computer on eBay. The USPS wanted over $100 to ship it - FedEx cost me $40 with insurance included. They have great technical support, and sent me email updates until my buyer finally signed for the package and delivery was complete. You don't pay up front. You can get a price estimate based on the the weight you get on your own scale, then they weigh it on their end and send you a bill based on the accurate weight. It's SO much more convenient. I want to start painting larger art again, and will definitely use FedEx instead of priority mail. -- Kathy

Re: USPS - Another problem.

It now costs $29.75 to send the first couple of lbs overseas -- whereas it was $27. The sales I made prior to the change collected the lower rate -- but I had to pay the higher rate. So I lost a few bucks in postage.

Re: USPS - Another problem.

The Governors of the U.S. Postal Service have approved new prices for First-Class Mail, Standard Mail, Periodicals (newspapers and magazines), Package Services (retail Parcel Post), and Special Services, effective May 11, 2009. The price of a First-Class Mail stamp increases two cents to 44 cents, and the additional ounce price remains at 17 cents. Note that most Postal Service shipping services prices were adjusted in January 2009 and will not change in May. Other price changes on May 11 include: a postcard stamp increases a penny to 28 cents; the first ounce of a large envelope (flat) increases 5 cents to 88 cents; the first ounce of a parcel increases 5 cents to $1.22. New First-Class Mail International postcard and letter (first ounce) prices are: Canada - 75 cents, Mexico - 79 cents, and other countries - 98 cents. The USPS recently reported its first quarter results (Oct. 1 - Dec. 31). It incurred a net loss of $384 million as the economic recession contributed to a 5.2 billion piece mail volume decline compared to the same period last year. The 9.3 percent volume drop marked the eighth consecutive quarter of accelerating volume declines. With no economic recovery expected for the remainder of FY 2009, the Postal Service projects volume for the year will be down by 12-15 billion pieces. Most of the decrease in mail volume is attributable to the worsening recession, which has adversely affected all classes of domestic mail. First-Class Mail volume decreased by 1.8 billion pieces and Standard Mail volume was down 3.0 billion pieces in the first quarter. In addition, the Postmaster General recently told Congress that the Postal Service was in "acute financial crisis" and asked for flexibility in the number of days the postal service delivers mail and for an eight-year adjustment to the USPS funding schedule for retiree health benefits. -- ~Jillian artist, Jillian Crider ... google me!

Re: USPS - Another problem.

I've never tried Endicia myself, but a lot of sellers are using it. I frequently get the email notifications that come from them. Their email notifications are good, maybe because they can be customized. They don't seem as impersonal as the PayPal notifications do. -- Kathy

And . . . just a reminder (don't want to start a new thread for this). Monday 2/16 is Presidents Day in the US, so no mail service. -- Kathy -- Edited by poozybear at 02/14/2009 7:43 AM PST

I choose to honor Calvin Coolidge on this Presidents Day. I'll be hanging little Calvins on the Presidents Day tree this year.
