Using rate tables to exclude specific states

Some sellers have a valid legal reason  to exclude some of the contiguous 48 states, such as selers of plant seeds who encounter the many prohibitions in California's agricultural policies.

The discussion boards often see questions from these sellers asking how they can exclude specific states. But alas they currently cannot. Just making clear bold statements in their listings ("We do not ship to the following states: CA, ...") doesn't work.

Would it be feasible and acceptable for these sellers  to use the rate tables to discourage buyers in those states (or at lest get their attention and start a conversation) by setting a ridiculously high shipping cost?

The rate tables are intended to quote fixed rates for regional carriers whose rates within a limited service area may be less than those quoted by major freight carriers or by UPS or FedEx.

But you raise an interesting point.  Can U.S. sellers quote rates only to select regions?  Sort of like excluding certain international countries or regions?

Hi duchess-at-speakeasy - It is a good idead. But there is no immediate plan to change exclusions functionality in the way you have described ie to NOT ship to certain regions. But this is in planning for a future release.

Using rate tables to exclude specific states

I raised the possibility of being able to raise the RATE of a certain State to an exhorbitant amount......i.e. Cal where the plant was prohibited........ which would seem feasible IF one could pick/choose which listings were under the rate table and use ordinary (calculated/fixed) for other listings.....

Never saw an answer..............

GMTA, that's what I thought I said in the OP, but @greg_shipping only answered duchess' question about location-specific exclusions.

Sellers will be able to set up multiple rate tables, so they'd be able to choose which one to apply to each listing.

You understand there are legal issues here, right?  State Laws that prohibit certain items?

And you already have a system in place:

  • A lawful shipping policy that specifies the states to which you can ship wine (if any), and any restrictions on such shipments (for example, whether the wine can be shipped directly to consumers)

  • State-by-state eligibility requirements for potential buyers, indicating whether buyers in particular states would be required to receive wine at a particular location in the seller's state, instead of having it shipped directly."

lol, I didn't read it that closely....just popped into mind when I was writing about how it would work....so I made an offhand comment about the exclusion possibility and he answered that that was contemplated for Phase II in 2018.  I'm wondering if they even have the process finished and perhaps didn't see the possibility of using it that way......  Would be alot of work, but worth it those who are trying to cancel because of the legal requirements.......

Chrys.......weren't talking liquor.......were talking plants...........and not the M type.
