Are there any scenarios that managed payments could create overdrafts in
a bank checking account? What about when they freeze funds for returns?

Having the same problem, got several overdrafts already and it caused me
a huge financial crisis because my landlord charges 10 a day for overdue
rent, and if your check bounces due to unforeseen overdrafts, it becomes
a downward spiral very quickly....
This post is not helpful. It's not about the amount. It's about the
funding source. People ARE legally entitled to know which account will
be debited so that they don't get overdrafts. It's not like ebay and/or
paypal has permission to just play russ...
